Black Isle was started by David Gladwin in 1998. An unemployed beer lover, he set out to make world-class beer using barley and hops, grown on organic farms, without the use of destructive chemicals. Black Isle Brewing Co is Scotland’s only organic brewery; pioneering craft beer from our beautiful, wild - and sometimes wet - Highland home. Organic is at the heart of everything we do - we believe in making great tasting beer using only natural ingredients, grown without the use of harmful chemicals. 330 ml bottle, bought in Edinburgh. ABV is 7.0%. This is an organic beer. Opaque very dark brown colour, nearly black. Large and lasting creamy tan head. Floaties from the sediment when I pour the last third of the bottle too vigorously. For once I can fully agree with the commercial description on the label: "A strong ale with a wonderfully rich aroma and flavour of fruit cake, treacle and plum." Add that the aroma also has notes of oak and alcohol, and that the very malty flavour also has decent hops in the finish and long aftertaste - and I have pretty much described this brilliant ale.

Bottle at RBESG 2007. A bit like a Belgian ale. It’s golden and has that peachy flavour. Yes, it’s pretty good.

Bottle at RBESG 2007. Very deep ruby colour with lasting tan head. Smokey tasty oily impy stout. Pretty awesome. Nice.

Bottled at RBESG ’07. Golden colour. Aroma of apricot jam. Sweet and fruity with clean, rounded mouthfeel and solid body. Notes of marmelade. Low bitterness.

500 ml bottle, at The 78, Glasgow. My notes say "Black Isle Organic Yellowhammer IPA, ABV 4.5%" - but I might have been "under the influence" ... Deep golden colour, large and lasting head. Unusual fruity aroma, very complex. The mouthfeel is maybe a bit thin - I drank it too cold though. Reasonably fruity and hoppy flavour, but not very exciting.

Bottle at The 78, Glasgow. Russet, lasting beige head. Bit of bad BCA rubber and cardboard. Some interesting red berry fruit, but the bottle conditioning doesn’t work.

Bottle (bought at the brewery):Pale golden and hazy, persistent white foam, delicate, Riesling-like, sourish-fruity nose (peaches); moderate sweet-bitter flavour, light to medium bodied; a little bit drier - but with a tinge of honey - in the fruity, slightly bitter finish. a very pleasant thirst-quencher.....

Bottle (bought at the brewery): Amber, slightly hazy, persistent, small fluffy head, sticking to the glass; citrus-fruity and malty nose with a mild, but distinctive aromatic hoppiness; moderate bitter-sweet flavour, light bodied; lingering malty-hoppy finish. a decent, well crafted Ale..............

Bottle (purchased at the brewery): Hazy, light amber coloured, quickly collapsing off-white head; fruity-herbal nose; moderate bitter-sweet flavour, light acidity, light bodied; dark fruity malty, herbal hops and the faintest illusion of smoke in the finish. O.K., not my cup of tea............

Bottle (bought at the brasserie): Hazy, deep amber coloured with ruby spots, persistent small off-white layer with a little lace; moderate vinous-fruity nose (raisins) with a chocolatey background; solid sweet-bitter flavour, medium bodied; vinous, chocolatey anmd sweetish finish. A pleasant one.........
