About
The future of beer lies in the past.

Beautifully crafted gluten free beer, expertly brewed from ancient grains & traditional ingredients.

In 1988 Derek Green had a problem. He had to avoid the gluten in barley and wheat, and at that time in the UK- indeed Europe - there was no gluten free beer available. A miserable life without beer lay ahead.

A natural entrepreneur though, he travelled across Europe at the start of the century getting brewery doors slammed in his face. The response was not good. “Too complicated” and “Why bother?” were common refrains.

So began a long process of discussions, meetings, trials, false hopes, and dead end trails. Breweries did not want to know about production that did not exist and one that could not be quantified.

The breakthrough came in 2003 when he met an eminent Belgian professor of brewing whom by coincidence had a daughter who also needed to avoid gluten, and there began a relationship with the mutual goal of brewing a beer made from alternative grains to barley, one that would be naturally gluten and wheat free. After numerous trials, in May 2004 Green’s launched the UK’s first ever naturally gluten free beer from Alternative Grains; named not surprisingly ‘Discovery’.

Strange one this: brewed by De Proefbrouwerij in Belgium and like all Green’s beers is brewed without gluten. The 330ml brown bottle, best before 3rd Jan 2011, drank and reviewed 23rd July 2010. Poured into a Veltins stemmed Pilsner glass (twice). The beer was a pale yellow with a lemon hue and a very slight haze. The pure white head never really grew up to much, but it leave some lacing. The smell was the normal nothingness most lagers/pilsners give off, hints of not much to be honest. The taste was very dry, one of the driest pilsners I’ve had. The nasty metallic flavours some beers in this style have appeared towards the end of the mouthfeel. Not overly impressed.

The first beer in one of my random beer tasting evenings with the wife. Brown 33cl bottle of gluten free Belgian Ale, best before 7 Dec 2011, drank Aug 2010. Poured into my ’La Chouffe’ stemmed tulip glass. Good clear amber coloured body with an off-white head that soon settled down to a mini wisp and collar. Some lacing did occur though, as the beer level dropped. Malted biscuit aroma and taste, but not really sweet as my comments might indicate, no gluten you see! I thought the beer a bit thin in the body stakes but pleasant enough.

330 ml bottle. Almost clear, pale golden body with a huge white head. Aroma is light malty, fruity, yeast and spicy. Flavor is light malty, fruity, yeast, spices and a bit floral. Nor much bitterness. Body is medium to thin, heavy carbonation. Quite OK, and quaffable, definitively Belgium, otherwise quite average and ordinary. Becomes a bit more interesting when yeast from bottle is added into glass.

Bottle, 5.8%. Mild fruity aroma. Hazy golden colour. Good stable plasticky white head. The flavour is fruity and spicy with a mild dusty note. Good mouthfeel. Very good for a gluten free beer.

Bottle 33 cl. Courtesy of yngwie. Pours a hazy golden with a white head. Fruity, yeasty nose. Medium body, a dry fruitiness and quite some Belgian yeast. Ends dry. Nothing spectacular but by far the best gluten free berr I’ve ever had - doesn’t taste like a gluten free beer. 180212
