Description
HIISI was founded in 2013, to fill a rather selfish need; We want to brew beers that we’d like to drink ourselves. Even if we do this for a living now, we still consider ourselves hobbyists of beer – it’s the flavor and meaningfulness of the beer that counts. We believe that, instead of just a beverage and means of intoxication, beer is an experience. Beer should be aromatic, nuanced and balanced, multi-sensory by nature. In addition to brewing great beer, we want to enjoy ourselves. We are here to develop interesting concepts with interesting people. We enjoy translating Finnish mythology and its lesser-known aspects into beers with character. We look for new ingredients and processes to continuously improve our craft and knowhow. We study, we try. We make our own. We will not educate others on the importance of rules, as we often do not follow them ourselves. We don’t concern ourselves with the reinheitsgebot, and we do not consider ourselves to be above any style of beer. That’s HIISI. Beer, against boredom.

Aroma has peaches and some fruity hops. Also gooseberry bush and grapefruit. Feels a bit floury. Flavour has peaches, vanilla, gooseberry bush and grapefruit. Also some raspberry tones at the end of the glass. Refreshing. Not much wheat here though, only hops.

Draught @ HBF ’14
Aroma has sweet raspberry juice and some malty tones. Flavour has raspberry juice hops and some minerals. Finishes with lingering hops. Palate is a bit foamy. A bit odd but drinkable. The strawberries step a bit aside once the hops take over at the middle of the glass. But they are still there.

Draught @ Villi Wäinö
Aroma has milk chocolate, licorice and some lactic notes. Flavour has milky tones, salty licorice, some herbs and hints of cocoa. Quite what it promises to be: a milk stout with licorice. Licorice is nice, the lactic notes are not.

Taste is smooth, carbonated, mildly roasty with some distant hints of spices, cocoa and licorice root. Finish is watery, carbonated, smooth and mildly roasty with some dry cocoa and coconut notes. A bit unbalanced and strange.

33 cl bottle @ olio. Batch #17: BBE 20.05.2014
Aroma has milky tones, some cocoa and hints of berries. Rather foamy palate. Flavour is odd and ashy tobacco and ash. Finishes spicy with licorice root. Cocos does not taste at all and cocoa aromas are just at normal stout level. Messy but not bad; I find the licorice root aromas nice. Reminds me of Kiira.
