Description
HIISI was founded in 2013, to fill a rather selfish need; We want to brew beers that we’d like to drink ourselves. Even if we do this for a living now, we still consider ourselves hobbyists of beer – it’s the flavor and meaningfulness of the beer that counts. We believe that, instead of just a beverage and means of intoxication, beer is an experience. Beer should be aromatic, nuanced and balanced, multi-sensory by nature. In addition to brewing great beer, we want to enjoy ourselves. We are here to develop interesting concepts with interesting people. We enjoy translating Finnish mythology and its lesser-known aspects into beers with character. We look for new ingredients and processes to continuously improve our craft and knowhow. We study, we try. We make our own. We will not educate others on the importance of rules, as we often do not follow them ourselves. We don’t concern ourselves with the reinheitsgebot, and we do not consider ourselves to be above any style of beer. That’s HIISI. Beer, against boredom.

A beautiful beer, colour is dark orange, a head is big and beige, also long lasting. The nose is succesfully, fruits with some tropical nuancees, grapefruits and pine needles, hint of fruit candies. Taste is fruitfull and slightly tropical, lots of pine needles, slightly rough, medium bitterness that stays until the end. Quite simple taste but succesfully. Almost medium bodied, balanced carbonation, fresh and quite smooth. Nice and rough beer without too dandyism. This mutt bites nicely.

Bottle 330ml (WPBF)
Hazy orange color, small white head. Light tart, fruity aroma. Light-bodied. Berryish, American hoppy flavor. There is light tartish notes probably from "tyrni" but otherwise this is quite "mild" beer flavorwise. Quite different than Rekola’s stronger version.

33 cl bottle @ wPBF’14, BBE 15.5.2014
Aroma is a bit odd and musty with herbal tones and yeast. Flavour has herbal notes, some grain and yeasty tones. The buckthorn kicks in at the finish with tartness. Good.

Bottle 330ml (WPBF)
Deep amber color, small white head. Caramel, some American fruity hoppyness. Light-bodied. Sweetish fruity hoppyness, short bitterness. Simple APA which needs more power. Perhaps Raivoava rakki is better.

Aroma is sweetish and somewhat heavy with some resiny tones and caramel. Flavour has berries, gooseberry bush, yeasty notes and hints of resin. Also some minerals and woody tones. A bit messy, but decent anyway.

Tap @Villi Wäinö
Clear amber color, good white head, lace. Aroma of pumpkin ales - pumpkin seeds. Light-bodied. Some spiceyness, light fruityness, light chilli tickle. Also some burn in the aftertaste. Probably tastes more complex when its your 1st beer of the night, not the umpteenth. Chili works nicely here, base beer itself is quite simple.

33,3 cl bottle @ Olutravintola Oljenkorsi, BBE 14.05.2014.
Aroma has blackcurrants, some juicy notes and licorice. Flavour has blackcurrants, licorice, some ashy tones and juice. Unique and interesting; perhaps too thin though.

33 cl bottle @ home. Batch #31: BBE 1.8.2014
Way too foamy and thin. Harsh score estimate: 2.9.

Tap @Winston Beer Festival
Premier of their first beer. Hazy deep orange color, small white head. Woody, yeasty, malty aroma. Medium to light bodied. Light sweetish fruityness, then English type spicey hoppyness and faint smoke. Their first brew, perhaps needs more aroma hops and more smoke.

Draught @ Villi Wäinö, Helsinki

Pours dark reddish orange with a thick foamy head. Aroma of berries, caramely malts, grassy hops and some faint hints of fruits. Taste is malty, caramely and bitter with notes of berries, hints of fruits and grass. Finish is sweetish, malty and long lasting bitter with some hints of berries and fruits. Quite malty IPA with a bit untypical hop profile. Almost feels like a light American style barley wine with all the sweet maltiness and bitterness. Could use some more refreshing fruitness from aroma hops
