Description
HIISI was founded in 2013, to fill a rather selfish need; We want to brew beers that we’d like to drink ourselves. Even if we do this for a living now, we still consider ourselves hobbyists of beer – it’s the flavor and meaningfulness of the beer that counts. We believe that, instead of just a beverage and means of intoxication, beer is an experience. Beer should be aromatic, nuanced and balanced, multi-sensory by nature. In addition to brewing great beer, we want to enjoy ourselves. We are here to develop interesting concepts with interesting people. We enjoy translating Finnish mythology and its lesser-known aspects into beers with character. We look for new ingredients and processes to continuously improve our craft and knowhow. We study, we try. We make our own. We will not educate others on the importance of rules, as we often do not follow them ourselves. We don’t concern ourselves with the reinheitsgebot, and we do not consider ourselves to be above any style of beer. That’s HIISI. Beer, against boredom.

Bottle [from Euro Swap 4, thanks to tiong] @ home. Opaque pitch black color, full sized long lasting creamy brown head. Aroma is malts, dark malts, light to moderately roasty, liquorice, light to moderately hoppy, lightly smoke. Taste malts, roasted malts, slightly hops, moderate to heavy bitterness. Medium body, perfect carbonation. Not the best black IPA I’ve ever had, but very very tasty indeed!

(Bottle, 0.33 l - BB 14.5.2014, at Oljenkorsi, 20140226) The beer poured black. Its head was quite large and lightly brown. Head formation very wild. Aroma had roasted malts, sourness, canned white asparagus and liquorice. Palate was medium bodied with medium carbonation. Flavours were burnt malts, sweetness, liquorice and bitterness. Aftertaste was ashy and bitter. Aroma was quite horrid but the taste was somewhat ok

Bottle 330ml (Alko)
Dark brown color, huge brownish, cloudy head. Aroma is dry - coffee, coffee beans, perhaps even hints of fresh wood. Medium-bodied. Woody hoppyness, simple slightly toasted maltyness, some caramel. Aftertaste has nice grapefruity hops. Could have a bit more salty licorice-roastyness to balance nice hop profile. Now leaves somewhat simple flavor to your mouth.

Bottled (from Alko Prisma, Vaasa). More or less black colour with a mediumsized head. Aroma is ashy, some roasted malts as well as some slight smoked wet wooden notes along with a bunch of fruits and resiny notes. Flavour is quite similar, and tastes quite much like a wellhopped Schwarzbier. Anyhow, this was a positive surprise as such, as I’m not big fan of Black IPA’s, but this was quite cool.

Smell of licorice, roasted malt. Black colour, very high mid-brown head. Aroma of hops, roasted malt, ash, finishes with licorice. Very nice balance between porter and IPA. Bitter, with a faint sweetness.

(Bottle, 0.33 l - batch #26 - BB 12.7.2014, from Alko, 20140214) The beer poured black. Its head was quite large and lightly brown. Aroma had coffee, chocolate and hops. Palate was medium bodied with medium carbonation. Flavours were sweetness, fruitiness, burnt malts and bitterness. Aftertaste was sweet, burnt and bitter. I am not a fan of Black IPAs. Some of the beers put into that category are nice but this one is just simply confusing. I just find the sweet and burnt flavours and the combination isn’t a pleasant one.

Draught @ St. Urho’s Portteri- ja Stoutpäivät 2014
Aroma is odd and sweet with some berry juice, some vanilla notes and hints of roastiness. Flavour has slightly tart raspberry juice, some milk chocolate and distant roasted tones. Not very stout, more like berry juice with touch of roastiness. Feels also a bit worty.
