Description
Hops and Dots Brew Co. founded in 2019 – originally based in Linthorpe, Middlesbrough. In 2021 the brewery relocated to County Durham with opportunity to open a taproom on the horizon and a brand new brewhouse! We wanted to make beer that we would drink – so, that’s what we did. We promote braille through our beers – we love dots. Craft beer should be acessible and hoppy – we love hops!

440ml can as part of a delivery from the brewery. Dark brown and mostly opaque with a large loose khaki head. Chocolate aroma, some soapy notes. The taste has more of the orange and raspberry alongside some floral notes, with a fruity sourness which cuts through the sweetness of the stout. It doesn't have a great balance though, and the sourness jars rather than complements. Medium body with carbonation on the heavy side. Odd beer, doesn't really work but it's certainly drinkable enough, even agreeable.

Keg draught at the Ale Stone, Aylestone, Leicester. Golden brown and mostly clear with an off-white head. Light tangerine aroma, some papaya. A little bit of metal. Sweet taste at first with the rapid onset of a medicinal bitterness. More tropical fruit in the aftertaste. This is a diety old fashioned DIPA. Hard not to revel in it.

440ml can in a delivery from the brewery and drunk at home. Light to mid-golden and clear with a spotty film of off-white head. Some apricot, lemon cream and dried grass notes in the aroma, a little bit of fresh astringency. Taste is pretty bitter, you expect the brief initial sweetness to last but it doesn’t. The astringent bitterness lasts through to the long finish. Soft to medium carbonation, a light oily body. A mixed bag.

330ml can delivered from the hewer, drunk at home.dark orange/gold and hazy with a small white head. Smells of light citrus, some melon, vanilla, a little bit of plastic. Intense bitter taste. They say it is low bitterness... no way, man this is bitter. Which is fine but it's marred by an odd plastic note. Medicinal finish, bit of bile in the aftertaste. This was a struggle unfortunately.

Keg tap at the Salmon, Leicester. Dark brown, impenetrable with a small ring of head. Some salted chocolate and yeast extract join the treacle-laden aroma. Very nice. Taste garners fewer accolades from me: it's nutty, sourish and a bit vegetal, none of which I expected. Light bitterness in the finish. Heavy carbonation. Odd beer, very hard to get into.

Can from Campervan brewery. Hazy golden body with a few flecks beneath a thin white head. Low carbonation. Faint lacing. Aroma of mint and pineapple. Flavour of grass, cigarette paper and bitter lemon. Medium body with a smooth texture. Soft fizz. It’s fine but I’d hoped for more of a hoppy hit.

On tap at Craft Beer Oasis, Crewe – at 7.2%. Pours pretty mich jet black with a small cream head. Has roasted malts and some lactose in the aroma. In the mouth it is fairly sweet and milky, with plenty of liquorice and hints of dark fruits, chocolate and coffee. Quite nice and very drinkable.
