Description

Stout brewed by a Belgian hobby brewer in Dutch Clinge (a few miles from where I live), commercialized through Vermeersen in nearby Hulst and first and foremost aimed at barbershops - an ever more common phenomenon now that growing a full beard is 'en vogue' again for men... Bottle shared by tderoeck, cheers! Thick and frothy, foamy, thickly papery lacing, well-retaining, pale greyish beige head over a deeply caramel bronze beer with burgundy hue, dark but still fully translucent, hazy. Aroma of caramel candy, moldy hazelnuts, fermenting tree leaves, stewed plums, liquorice, sugared tea, banana, beetroot, leather. Fruity, estery onset, plum and banana with a touch of fig, sweet due to residual sugars, sourish undercurrent, softish carbo, slick and smooth mouthfeel. Caramelly and toffeeish malt sweetishness, bit bready also due to yeastiness, lingering sugariness in the finish, nutty and a tad toasted but certainly not roasted bitter as one would expect from a stout, herbal hop bitterishness, spicy phenols, lingering caramel malt sweetness. Not a bad beer per se, but by no means an Irish dry stout - not even a real stout for me, in carrying too much Belgian yeastiness and sugariness as well as lacking in roastedness. This is not a stout but a dubbel - and not even one that is completely free of flaws - it will take a lot of work and re-designing to turn this into an actual dry stout...

8/IX/17 - 33cl bottle, shared @ home with Alengrin - BB: n/a (WTF?) (2017-1483) Thanks to Bart for the bottle!
Clear dark brown beer, small creamy beige head, little stable, bit adhesive. Aroma: malty, soft roast, lots and lots of banana, yeast profile. MF: very lively carbon, medium body. Taste: sweet, caramel, sugary, lots of banana, soft bitterness, bit sourish, no roast. Aftertaste: very gentle roast, hardly noticeable, bit hoppy, some coffee and caramel, banana and yeast. Way too much Belgian yeast in this beer, together with the lack of a decent amount of roasted malts, makes more of a Belgian dubbel than a stout. By no means could this be classified as a stout... not even a sweet stout or something similar.
