Description

33cl pour from a 75cl bottle in Œudeghien, Belgium following the Les Fous de VTT MTB event. Pours clear gold, good pure white head. Gentle sugary yeast sweetness on the nose. Medium to light bodied, quite a pleasant, clean blonde overall, perhaps a slight herbal hint to it, but overall, nicely refreshing.

Légendes coming up with a Pilsener, supporting that style claim with the use of Saaz hops and the absence of any added sugars - not enough to convince me that this is actually a Lager, but anyway. Vichy bottle bought at a shop in Bassilly. Medium thick, snow white, shred-lacing, uneven but firm and stable, slowly breaking head over an initially clear, warm golden blonde robe with apricot tinge, becoming more peachy and misty with sediment (so at least unfiltered). Aroma of soggy brown (!) bread, cooked pork (oddly), tomato soup from a can, grilled salsify, paprika-flavoured crisps, minerals, raw cereals. Sweetish onset, fairly clean in terms of esters but still some light banana, pear and peach elements here and there, moderately carbonated slick mouthfeel, minerally notes lingering under a smooth, thinnish, cereally pale maltiness - again somehow sweeter and a bit more 'moelleux' than I expect from an actual Pilsener. The peachy aspect of whatever limited fruitiness is present, somehow gets accentuated a bit by that effect, so that in the end, when a pinch of floral hops tries to add some drying bitterness and only limitedly succeeds, this still feels like a top-fermented Belgian blonde. I maintain that this is not a Pilsener at all but a cleaned up, 'stripped' and bare version of top-fermented blonde, like there are many around in Belgium these days, and I cannot help but feeling a little bit cheated every time I encounter one. Not a great success - but I have never been sincerely impressed or even pleasantly surprised by Géants anyway. Anything but legendary.

Bottle, 2001 02 03. Dark, no head, oily. Dates, figs, licorice, tobacco, malt. Smooth, some warmth, licorice umami soy sauce. I am surprised, but it seems I like old stuff.

New and limited winter edition in this series, coming from the same stubby bottle as the others, but enlarged to 66 cl. Mine came from the Delhaize supermarket in Zele. Irregular, large-bubbled, coarse, off-white, loosely structured, immediately opening and eventually all but dissolving head on a clear orange golden robe with amberish tinge and just a few tiny bubbles here and there. Aroma of strong DMS (overcooked green cabbage), rubber, dust, bread crust, coriander powder, cooked cotton cloth (pasteurisation), peanuts, very old dried figs, dried apple peel, vague touch of jenever (could be a herbal thing, not necessarily alcohol); the description also mentions liquorice but this remains very faint, if detectable at all. Moderately sweetish, sleek onset, vague hints of dried peach, persimmon and apple peel but low in esters, prickly carbonation through a smooth, slick, somewhat thinnish body of cereally malts complemented with fermented sugars, something vaguely caramelly and something clay-like. Unpleasant rubbery notes in the end as well as returning DMS; a floral hop bitter element shows up but remains weak, while for a brief moment, distant echoes of coriander and anise (and yes, perhaps that liquorice too) are heard, but dissolve into nothing as quickly as they came. These echoes doubtlessly reveal the nature of the added "natural flavour" (quote the ingredients list) but everything here feels utterly bland, industrial, tired and dull - very little about this weird beer feels really 'natural' and in the land of traditional Christmas ales, it shows remarkably little flavour - apart from unpleasant ones like the DMS. I never really liked this brand, but this dead, dull, characterless excuse for a winter beer was even worse - much worse in fact - than I was already fearing. Rubbish even for this hypercommercial and soulless brand, but the bottle is a very original and memorable one to Belgian standards - I had never even seen this type of bottle at this volume...
