On tap at Crunchy’s in East Lansing. Hazy orange body, thin off-white head. Unique candy-like body, with dark fruit notes punctuating the sweet biscuity malts. Interesting citrusy hops, a touch medicinal. A very nice take on the style.

Cloudy sediment-laden apricot body, thick puffy off-white head. Looks like apple cider mixed with tang. Bready aroma with light citrus and grassy, bitter hops. Sweet citrus body, bready, strongly yeasty, which adds a creaminess to the body. Bitter, grassy, somewhat citric hops at the finish in addition to tropical fruits. The hops give this an IPA character. I’m not buying this as a pilsener. Pretty good but not worth the $16 tag.

Deep dark stout with a thick moka head. Aroma of celery salts, chocolate, and light alcohol. In mouth, a rich bitter chocolate with molasses and warming alcohol. Rich bodied stout, with an off-putting aroma. Enjoyed with the Mtl Crew Sept. 9, 2006.

Prune juice appearance- murky brown, opaque, with a medium tan head. Aroma of plum and prune, Belgianesque with dark fruits and tartness, toffee, with smoke and breads. Didn’t bring to mind a stout right away. The flavor was surprisingly acerbic, with extremely bitter dark chocolates dominating the palate, followed by hot alcohol notes. Plummy with roast and brown sugar beneath the chocolate assault. Rough palate. Interesting but not especially enjoyable, with way too much emphasis on cocoa and alcohol. Beers that challenge the palate are often not very good, contrary to marketing campaigns. This is better than bad but not worth the cost.

On tap at Crunchy’s. Hazy straw-colored body, thin-medium off-white head. Earthy, peppery, floral hops, biscuity malt, with hints of lemon and light sweetness. Medium-bodied, fairly complex. Less lemony and grassy than most pilseners, this beer was was reminiscent of an American Pale Ale.

On tap at Crunchy’s in East Lansing. Murky brown body, thin off-white head. Sweet aroma with notes of brown sugar and grape. Toasty body with brown sugar sweetness, grape, and an earthy, slightly hoppy finish. Hints of chocolate. Nondescript but not unpleasant.

2004 draught at the MBGSBF. Golden/maize colored, bright and mostly clear with a small white head. Smells very powerful, bittersweet and spicy, with muted vinegar and a tangy spiced note that reminds me of black peppercorn wheat crackers. A hint of sweetness in there. Flavor is very round, sweet and spicy. This is one of the most heavily spiced beers I’ve tried. I did pick up some sweetness to it, though the heavy wheat presentation seemed to dry it out way too much. The pepper mixed with the citric qualities seemed to create a strange bittersweet (slightly remenescent of sweet and sour sauce). It still had some light beer qualities and was drinkable, just very unique.

2004 draught at the MBGSBF. Pours a bright and very deep cherry red, thick and heavy looking with little to no head. Aroma of sharp acidic fruits, vigorously swirling around and challenging the senses asking, "Am I really a beer??" Flavor begins with a mixture of dark berry fruits, ripe red fruits and vinegary, almost vinous fruits. It is not overly sweet, which is impressive, has almost no trace of alcohol and is pretty tasty as far as fruit is concerned, with some nice tart flavors towards the finish. But the buck seems to stop there, at least for me, as this one didnt get past the fruit. Little can I find here that resembles beer, maybe a touch of graininess from the barley, but it’s only passing and provides so little texture. Unfortunately, the beer has almost no carbonation, and this is not a good thing with huge fruit beers, because it comes off as a fruit juice. The body is very loose and lightly watery. Give me a good amount of more grains, some more yeast and carbonation and I would be much happier. Interesting attempt though.
