Description

33cl Bottle from Deen, thanks Joost! Brewed for De Vlijt, not at De Vlijt, as Veluwse Schavuyt, according to the label. Murky amber colour, off-white head. Aroma of sweet malts, caramel, yeast. Flavour is sweet, malty, yeasty, caramel, light fruity, nutty, light bitter finish. Light bodied. OK.

One of the more recent additions to this range apparently, bottle from the Deen supermarket in Lelystad. Medium thick, stable, lacing, off-white head dissolving a bit in the middle after a few minutes; clear orange golden blonde colour with quite lively fizz, becoming lightly hazy as the bottle progresses. DMTS rules the nose: a strong odour of melted rubber and burning plastic, along with unmistakable DMS (cooked cauliflower), strong glueish phenols and very strongly ’jenever’-like alcohol cover less offensive hints of industrial caramel, bitter honey, brown bread crust, burnt sugar, dried banana, roasted peanuts, chicken spices, canned apricot, breakfast cereals, fermenting nettles, white pepper, overripe papaja. Soft and restrainedly fruity onset, white candi sugar sweetness accentuating hints of canned apricot, red apple peel and some orange, with a basic sourishness behind it; carbo remains soft, mouthfeel is slick and smooth, a bit resinous but on the thin side as well. Caramelly malt sweetness quickly turns into a bitterish toastedness, accompanied by simple, late grassy hop bitterness in the end, quite effective in its attempts to save the day, but not standing any chance against the retronasal nail polish phenols and especially the alcohol, which is palpable almost from the start, lending this beer a strong young ’jenever’-like flavour which becomes extremely tiring and bothersome, if not wry in the finish. Feels quite industrial even, the simplest and least appealing form in which the tripel style can appear; the burnt sugar bitterness keeps lingering more than a noble hop bitterness and the alcohol is very badly hidden even if this beer carries only 7.5% ABV which is on the lighter side for a tripel. As pleasantly surprised I was by their IPA, this is a big disappointment. Underachieving even for a run-of-the-mill tripel which it apparently aims to be.

Bottle from a Deen supermarket in Lelystad. Lightly lacing, irregularly shaped, cream white, moussy head over a misty deep peach blonde beer with brownish-amberish hue. Aroma of dried orange peel, cloves, white pepper, curry spices, papaja, cardboard, earthy turnip or beetroot, old cookies, dusty dried flowers, red apple, unripe peach, nutmeg, hay, mouldy lemon, bitter honey. Soft fruity onset of unripe peach, redcurrant and red apple, medium carbo, dryish and softly sourish from the start with just a tad of sweetishness, bit ’dusty’ feeling which increases a bit towards the finish, spicy phenols accompanying the whole palate over a backbone of bready, very lightly toasted malts; finish is yeasty and phenolic as well as drying hoppy in a very earthy, leafy, dried spice kind of way, with floral and light citrus peel like aromatic aspects. The yeastiness, visibly apparent from the start, adds to the earthy impression but it does not become thoroughly ’dirty’. Quaffable, but not really impressive in any aspect, just another Belgian style blonde.

33cl bottle from Wijnhandel Versluis at home. Looks like tea with thin and quickly disappearing head. Nose watery sugary sweetness and bitter hops. Taste sugary sweet like roosvicee lemonade. Yeast, piney, toast, very bready but above all it’s flat and lifeless. Very little carbonation, lives up a little when taken in the mouth. Below average, sweet sugar water.
