Description
Salopian Brewery first brewed in Shrewsbury in 1995. Founded by Martin Barry on the site of the old Onions Dairy and like many breweries the kit we first brewed on was small and rudimentary at only two barrels. Brewing ceased in late 1997 due to financial problems. Our chairman Wilf Nelson joined the brewery in 1998 – Wilf coming on board gave the brewery much needed stability and vision to move to forward and brewing recommenced in January 1998.

Slowly, as cash flow permitted, we upgraded our brewing kit and replaced rusty dented vans with slightly less rusty dented vans. It was the onset of brewing a more eclectic range of cask ale, whilst embracing both traditional styles and those of our locality. 2014 saw the brewery make its final move – we hope! – to the village of Hadnall on the outskirts of Shrewsbury.

Cask at the Old Bell, Southside. Pours clear golden orange with a thick white head. Aromas of citrus and tropical fruit. Taste is very fruity, satisfyingly bitter finish. Enjoyed it.

440ml can, thanks to Mike for this. Misty gold pour, small white head. Definitely zesty, definitely lemony. Can't recall lemon dream ever being lemony like this. Some sharp citrus and gooseberry coming through. Nicely sour. Decent.

Cask at the Wellington, Birmingham. Poured almost black in colour with a mostly lasting frothy, off-white head. The aroma is roasty, light chocolate. The flavour is moderate to light liquorice bitter, light sweet, with a smooth, somewhat light, chocolate, earthy, light herbal, aromatic, liquorice bitter palate. Medium to light bodied with soft carbonation.

440ml can @ Salopian. Pours dark, loose tan head. No cherry for me I'm afraid, some chocolate but not jumping out as black forest gateau.. doesn't seem much of an oat influence. Dry bitter close. Like it as a stout but as a black forest stout it's poor.

440ml can at Mum's, thanks Mike for squirrelling this away for me! Pours a generally clear gold, loose white head. Aroma of citrus, grapefruit. Clean, clear flavour profile, moderate citrus notes, crisp citrus, seems a little subdued compared to fresh Kashmir, seems more in line with Jaipur. Fine seshy pale.

440ml can thanks Mike for squirrelling this away for me. Shared with Eric in Eecke. Cloudy pale complexion, small white head. Aroma of mild yeast. Very modest Belgian wit notes to taste, ok hoppy pale overall but nothing like I expected.

Remember when this was first launched, one of the first beers brewed at the new facility in Hadnall, was meant to be something else but went a little awry so got a new name - and pretty sure it won awards! Slighty hazy pale gold with a frothy / creamy white head and a soft fruity aroma. Light and fruity, some juicy tropicals with citrus bitterness and a dry fruity finish.

Clear and golden with a bubbly white head and a citrus fruit aroma. Soft cereal malt initially, a sharp citrus kick, some piney notes, grapefruit bitterness and a dry finish.
