Description
Waterloo Beer is brewed with care in the Mont-Saint-Jean farm, the famous 'English Hospital' of the Battle of Waterloo. More than ever, this high-quality beer is a symbol of authenticity, craftsmanship and courage. In 1815, during the famous conflict, the troops were supplied with high-fermented beer that gave them strength and courage to face each other. Two centuries later, Anthony Martin is proud to revisit this moment in history by reviving the local beer quality, prepared strictly according to the original recipe: Waterloo – beer of bravery!

Vilsteren. Zoet bruine suiker gebrand graan melasse achtig. Geen nadrukkelijke gistsmaak en dat is wel eens fijn voor een Belg. Backlog from 2015/05/24.

This was one of the first speciality beer that I have tried back when I got interested in this sort of thing, and it was, for a long time, my favourite beer. Re-visiting it now, after about 700 new beers, I realise that, while it isn’t as good as I remembered, this is still a solid beer, all around. Very dark amber, almost opaque, with a bit of head. Caramel, citrus, in the nose, with a bit of lambic funkiness, and, believe it or not, notes of bourbon and some vanilla. The taste is quite well balanced, with notes of cocoa, vanilla, caramel and some alcohol. Medium body with a bitter-sweet (more sweet than bitter) after-taste.

750 ml. bottle, tasting glass @ “2de Bierproeffestival van De Dijleschuimers”. Deep amber mocha, little head. Nose is industrial herbal metallic syrup, artificial caramel, thin metallic syrupy cereal. Taste is thin, metallic, bit watery, slick industrial caramel sugar, very cheap sugar, honey, thin syrupy rubbish,… Overly metallic caramel syrup body. Overprized nonsense as expected to be honest. You are way better of with Waterloo Strong Dark which is actually a decent beer. This one feels a bit killed.

Bottle (from SIP, Tallinn). Pours dark ruby with beige head. The head doesn’t stay. Aroma is sweet, malt, caramel, dark fruits. Flavor is sweet, some sourness, dark fruits, plums, dark sugar, malt. Alcohol is rather well covered. Overall: ok dark BSA, but has noticeable "macro feeling", which I don’t enjoy.
