Description
Trappist ale has been brewed at the Abbey of Our Lady of Koningshoeven in Berkel-Enschot since 1884. The monks of the abbey are the origin of this ale. They are popularly called "Trappists", after the origin of their order: the French Soligny-La-Trappe. This order is characterized by austerity, silence and the duty of charity.

Within the abbey walls, Brewery de Koningshoeven produces Dutch Trappist ale. Still under the supervision and responsibility of the monks and still based on the inner conviction "to do good": part of the proceeds go to charities. These original principles provide La Trappe Trappist with the exclusive label "Authentic Trappist Product" from the International Trappist Association.

Between 1969 and 1980 the beers were produced under license by Artois (InBev). By 1999 the monastery had become a subsidery of Bavaria - Netherlands this resulted in La Trappe beers no longer displaying the Authentic Trappist Product label. In 2005 an agreement was reached by which the monks would take a more active part in the brewery operation and so the label was restored.

0.75 l bottle from 'Drankgigant.nl', best before August 2026. Slightly hazy, golden amber with a medium large, frothy, slowly diminishing, white head. Sweetish, rather yeasty-spicy, a bit fruity-floral aroma of grains, banana, clove, honey, vanilla and light pear. Gently sweet, moderately bitter, rather yeasty-spicy, slightly boozy and minimally fruity-floral taste of grains, straw, banana, clove, honey, vanilla and light pear, followed by a medium long, gently bitter, slightly boozy, fairly harsh-yeasty finish. Medium to full body, rather effervescent mouthfeel, average carbonation. Solid Blond, very yeasty and grainy, a bit too boozy. A super classic approach with an emphasis on malts and yeast rather than hops.

Draft @ Roadburn 2025, first beer of the festival. Golden blond appearance, light mist, good pure white head. Vibrant yeasty nose, flavour profile presents a deep blonde profile, good yeasty expression, medium bodied with an alluring sweetness, nice malt depth. Really excellent blonde.

Bottle, tasted side by side with the normal La Trappe Blond. Color: Hazy amber, slightly darker than the normal version. Aroma: Malty, yeasty. The normal version clearly has aroma of Barley malt, the special has a little more complexity. Taste: Again the special edition has a more complex and slightly denser malty taste. Hints of spicy rye. Yeasty notes too, like the normal version. Floral hoppy backbone. Nice special edition, it's fun to see the differences the addition of other malts make, although I think it would be hard to describe the differences when not tasting side by side.

Draft @ La Trappe. Pours a clear mahogany, smooth white head. Lovely subtle toffee character, super soft palate, but lacks a certain richness.. bottle seems better, unfortunately no oak aged available.
