Description
Trappist ale has been brewed at the Abbey of Our Lady of Koningshoeven in Berkel-Enschot since 1884. The monks of the abbey are the origin of this ale. They are popularly called "Trappists", after the origin of their order: the French Soligny-La-Trappe. This order is characterized by austerity, silence and the duty of charity.

Within the abbey walls, Brewery de Koningshoeven produces Dutch Trappist ale. Still under the supervision and responsibility of the monks and still based on the inner conviction "to do good": part of the proceeds go to charities. These original principles provide La Trappe Trappist with the exclusive label "Authentic Trappist Product" from the International Trappist Association.

Between 1969 and 1980 the beers were produced under license by Artois (InBev). By 1999 the monastery had become a subsidery of Bavaria - Netherlands this resulted in La Trappe beers no longer displaying the Authentic Trappist Product label. In 2005 an agreement was reached by which the monks would take a more active part in the brewery operation and so the label was restored.

(Bottle, 0.75l,from Alko, 20250718) The beer poured golden and hazy. Its head was medium sized and white. Aroma had honey, spicy yeast and grass. Palate was medium bodied with medium carbonation. Flavours were grass, honey, spicy yeast, sugars and bitterness. Aftertaste had sugars, spiciness and bitterness. A good and balanced brew.

Bottle at home. Clear light golden with big lasting white head. Looks good! Sweet malts, wort, yoghurt, grassy, light metallic, CO2, paper. Just medium sweet and bitter. Over light bodied. Looks nice but otherwise I really don't like this very much.

From Belgian Style Ales.

Pours a clear amber with a 2 finger head of foam, excellent head retention and lacing.

The smell is malty, caramel with lots of grain.

The taste is sweet grain, caramel, a little nutty. Bit of tartness as well. Very cereal like.

Decent body, not something that I would drink again.

Bottle @ home. Unclear deep golden body under a big, foamy white head. Aroma is malt, grain, bread, spicy and Belgium yeast. Taste has this typical Belgium sweetness with malt, some kind of generic ripe fruitiness, spicy yeast, mild caramel, sugar, low bitterness and some warming alcohol. Balanced body and average aftertaste. A decent version of a Belgium blonde/golden ale without anything extraordinary, but as often with this kind of beers they grow on me while drinking one bottle by myself a quite evening without any kind of rating stress or rating session.

Bottle from HoTM I think. It pours lightly hazy deep blonde with a copper hue and fluffy white head. The aroma is sweet and intoxicating, pear drops, ripe melon, apple crumble, icing sugar, dried fruits, raisin, sultana, bread pudding and a touch of clove spice. The taste is smooth, hearty malt character, bread, biscuit, sponge cake, cereal, bread pudding, dried fruits, raisin, booze soaked sultana, ripe melon, poached pear, apple, toasty spice, grass and some alcohol warmth through a more drying finish. Medium bodies and moderate to high, fluffy carbonation. Rounded and moreish. No problem taking down this 750ml.
