Netherlands 🇳🇱

Associated Venue: Proeflokaal La Trappe
Established in 1884
Within the abbey walls, Brewery de Koningshoeven produces Dutch Trappist ale. Still under the supervision and responsibility of the monks and still based on the inner conviction "to do good": part of the proceeds go to charities. These original principles provide La Trappe Trappist with the exclusive label "Authentic Trappist Product" from the International Trappist Association.
Between 1969 and 1980 the beers were produced under license by Artois (InBev). By 1999 the monastery had become a subsidery of Bavaria - Netherlands this resulted in La Trappe beers no longer displaying the Authentic Trappist Product label. In 2005 an agreement was reached by which the monks would take a more active part in the brewery operation and so the label was restored.

Bottled at PBF. Clear mahogany colour, small coarse head. Caramelly, earthy licorice aroma. Mid sweet with medium to full body and well rounded mouthfeel. Earthy licorice, marzipan. Warming mid bitter finish. Potent, fairly complex and rich

Bottle - certainly looks the part - dark amber with a think off-white head - body is fairly full and texture is creamy - flavors of dark bread, clove, light caramel, slight dark fruit - the yeast character is there in the background, reminiscent of Westmalle Dubbel, but it is pretty faint - light bitterness on the tail end, with lingering yeast character - for and alcohol-free dark Belgian, I’d say it’s pretty dang good.

On tap at Cardinal, Stavanger. Brewed with 4 grains. Deep golden to orange colour, creamy white head. INTENSE aroma of white kandij sugar syrup and spicy Belgian ale yeast, hints of rye bread. Pleasant flavour, not as intense as the aroma, but with the same elements, moderate hops in the finish.
