La Trappe Trappist - Abdij O.L.V. Koningshoeven
Commercial Brewery
in Berkel-Enschot,
Noord-Brabant,
Netherlands 🇳🇱
Owned by
Bavaria Brouwerij (Swinkels Family Brewers)
Associated Venue: Proeflokaal La Trappe
Established in 1884
Within the abbey walls, Brewery de Koningshoeven produces Dutch Trappist ale. Still under the supervision and responsibility of the monks and still based on the inner conviction "to do good": part of the proceeds go to charities. These original principles provide La Trappe Trappist with the exclusive label "Authentic Trappist Product" from the International Trappist Association.
Between 1969 and 1980 the beers were produced under license by Artois (InBev). By 1999 the monastery had become a subsidery of Bavaria - Netherlands this resulted in La Trappe beers no longer displaying the Authentic Trappist Product label. In 2005 an agreement was reached by which the monks would take a more active part in the brewery operation and so the label was restored.

A mild to medium haze on this amber - brown beer, short and short lived bubbly tan head. Airy palate, semi dry, good fine minerally carbonation. Light bodied malts but, a very good creamy and caramel sweetness with nicely integrated touches of oaky vanilla and wood. A light estery sweetness over the bourbon soaked ripe fruits, more caramel and cream on the back end. Good stuff.

A beloved series to me but since Brexit, the vast majority of euro beer shops can't be bothered to send to the UK despite reaping loadsa wonga from me in the years preceding. I'd love to state my feelings on this but Keir Stammers thought police might be knocking on my door in the morning. Its a hazy amber beer, small bubbly tan head. Smooth and fairly dry palate, good superfine minerally carbonation. Light bodied malts, a thin but pleasing creamy sweetness and a fair amount of caramel. Ripe whiskey soaked fruits, rich and fairly rounded, a modest whisky spice. Mild esters. Some pear and for me, someone who largely despises the band aid tastes, this is pitched perfectly. It's just a minor element but adds perfectly to another great BA Quad in this series

I still deeply regret the decision La Trappe made - years ago - to reduce the distribution of their Quadrupel Oak Aged series, making it a lot harder (and more expensive) for me to obtain them, because this is the original oak aged quad series after all and it has brought me a lot of joy in the years when it was still relatively easily available. Anyway, thanks to Bart again for sharing this 54th variant, aged on Bordeaux wine barrels. Pale greyish-white, medium thick, opening, membrane-lacing head over an initially clear bronze-brown robe with copper-red glow, misty further on. Aroma of caramel candy, almond, pronounced oak 'vanilla', dried lingonberries, brandy, brown sugar, gingerbread, bubblegum, sugared tea, banana peel. Sweet, rounded onset, candi-sugary but not cloying, banana ester mingled with impressions of blue plum, raisin and candied cherry, this time also with a grape-juicy undertone from the wine barrels; medium carb, full but smooth body. Caramelly and brown-bread-doughy malt core, bubblegummy edges, hints of toffee and almond here and there, evolving into a complex finish with a more vinous character, strongly coloured by woodiness (including that vanillin effect) but also very clearly showing red Bordeaux wine effects, even though the expected grapey and tannic tartness fails to materialise - for better or for worse. Instead, a warming brandy-ish alcohol effect comes in, highlighting the dark maltiness and fruitiness rather than the astringency of red wine. The Bordeaux is there, but somehow in a more smoothened way than I was expecting - but it remains a prime example of its ilk, and it felt really heartwarming to be able to revisit a fine series I have been missing out on for many years now. If only I could catch up with all of them...

Very good, dense, slowly collapsing if persistent head, fed by fine carbonated clear orange-copper beer. Spicy, bit metallic nose, gassy; fresh malts. Sweet, grainy, malty. Half-dried leaves; faintly almondy - both sweet and bitter almonds. Tastes alcoholic despite its modest ABV. The sweetness comes over as if not fully attenuated. Well-carbonated, very slick; medium to well-bodied. Almost sticky. In the end, not that much different from 'ordinary' La Trappe. Txs to Stef!
