Description
Trappist ale has been brewed at the Abbey of Our Lady of Koningshoeven in Berkel-Enschot since 1884. The monks of the abbey are the origin of this ale. They are popularly called "Trappists", after the origin of their order: the French Soligny-La-Trappe. This order is characterized by austerity, silence and the duty of charity.
Within the abbey walls, Brewery de Koningshoeven produces Dutch Trappist ale. Still under the supervision and responsibility of the monks and still based on the inner conviction "to do good": part of the proceeds go to charities. These original principles provide La Trappe Trappist with the exclusive label "Authentic Trappist Product" from the International Trappist Association.
Between 1969 and 1980 the beers were produced under license by Artois (InBev). By 1999 the monastery had become a subsidery of Bavaria - Netherlands this resulted in La Trappe beers no longer displaying the Authentic Trappist Product label. In 2005 an agreement was reached by which the monks would take a more active part in the brewery operation and so the label was restored.

Darkish amber with some haze and a thick head. Toasty, bready, sweetish wort notes, and a touch of esters.

Aromas of raisins, butterscotch, brandy and shortbread. There's a bit of citrus in the mouth and the mouthfeel is buttery. Intense, yet very quaffable. It's a beauty.

330ml bottle. Good looking in the glass with a deep mahogany coloured body, a covering beige head leaving spotty lacing on the glass. Moderate smell of mid-sweet malts, hints of caramel. Malt-driven taste with notes of bread, ripe fruits, and caramel. Short end, mid-sweet. Quite alright for a non-alcoholic beer. (Tromsø, 12.07.2026).

Bottle from Mr. Hop. Dark brown, small head, lightly sweet nose. Very nice flavor wow reminiscent of the full beer with raisins and some yeasty notes, but all clearly reduced in power and complexity by the alcohol removal process. Decent and better than many alkfrei, but just a distant cousin of the original.

Bottle from Jonas, thanks! Very dark amber, tall lasting head of large bubbles. Bready, toffee nose with hints of earthiness. Nicely sweet but not overly so, clean bitterness and roasted malt in the background. Chewy raisins, toffee-biscuit, fresh dark bread with molasses and honey... Warming but not too hot alcohol... This beer has it all. Classic.

Bottle at home shared with Laura. Murky brownish color with a red hue, small beige head. Aroma is malts, quite vinous, wood. Flavor is malts, again vinous, a bit smoky oddly enough. In the finish there's sweetness and bitterness combined. A bit more sharp in the bitterness than normal I think. Hmm overall, imo a little less good than normally.

0,375 l bottle from Zisch, Wildeshausen. BB 03/2043. Nearly black in the glass, no real head. Intensive dark wine, oak, malty vanilla and nearly like Bourbon. Taste starts with oak, slick malty dark red wine, sweetness, vanilla. Increasing malty and pleasant boozy in the second part. Thick texture. Really nice one
