Description
Trappist ale has been brewed at the Abbey of Our Lady of Koningshoeven in Berkel-Enschot since 1884. The monks of the abbey are the origin of this ale. They are popularly called "Trappists", after the origin of their order: the French Soligny-La-Trappe. This order is characterized by austerity, silence and the duty of charity.

Within the abbey walls, Brewery de Koningshoeven produces Dutch Trappist ale. Still under the supervision and responsibility of the monks and still based on the inner conviction "to do good": part of the proceeds go to charities. These original principles provide La Trappe Trappist with the exclusive label "Authentic Trappist Product" from the International Trappist Association.

Between 1969 and 1980 the beers were produced under license by Artois (InBev). By 1999 the monastery had become a subsidery of Bavaria - Netherlands this resulted in La Trappe beers no longer displaying the Authentic Trappist Product label. In 2005 an agreement was reached by which the monks would take a more active part in the brewery operation and so the label was restored.

Dark amber colour, no head, quite clean. Some chestnut honey, flat mouthfeel, moderately sweet, with strong oxidation, fun without being too offensive.

2002-01-08, bottle, 8% ABV, 5-4-7-3-14=33
Gold colour. Some malt aroma, not expecially interesting. Warm malty sensation, quite good taste, with a sweet liquorice hint. Only partially balanced by the bitternes, the palate is ordinary. Pleasant to drink, but nothing really remarkable.

I am fully convinced that someone put carrot juice in my bottle instead of beer. . . i will have to try this again, must be an acquired taste. Rerate. Finally gave it a second chance. Much better appreciation for it this time around. Aroma is actually quite pleasant, full of bosch pears. Not sweet, just crisp pear aroma mixed in with some slight alcohol notes. Flavor has some pear flavor, but also sweetens much towards the middle offering some raisin flavor. The alcohol is high, but quite tasty and this beer is not astringent. I still dont think this has quite the complexity of better trappist ales, and Im not sure if Im in to the acidity level in this, that is quite high. Decent carbonation level and less than average sediment.

Dark chestnut colour, no head. Some aroma of tobacco prevails over the malt, there are signs of age. It's mellow, lightly sweet, without much depth, candi sugar, a bit hot, but can't really pinpoint any oxidation. Drinkable.

2019-04-14, ceramic bottle, bb 04-2011, the cork is tagged 49/07, possibly 12 years old, 6-4-7-3-14=34
Hazy chestnut colour. Chestnut honey, sweet, no carbonation, a bit more character than an equally old Tripel.
Old but not bad.

brown with floaters, medium sized creamy and persistent head. The aroma is moderately oxidized. Round mouthfeel, didn't get too dry; caramel flavor, very low bitterness, pleasen alcohol tickling

Brown color; medium sized head. The aroma is mild, but also perfumy and fruity, with caramel. It has a good caramel flavor and malt, with decent residual sweetness, well balanced by some bitterness and a light, sweet nutty touch. Smooth and elegant vintage, very enjoyable.

2009-06-17, draught at Monk's Café - Wallingatan, Stockholm, 7-4-7-3-13=34
Bright amber color, creamy head, nice lace. Malty aroma, lightly fruity (apples, and this is not a good sign). Medium body, sweetish caramel flavor. The bitterness is surpassed by the alcohol warmth; the final is a bit fruity too. Boozey.

2002-07-07, bottle, vintage 2000-2001, 7-4-7-3-14=35
Amber-brown colour, misty. Nice malt aroma in the beginning, with porto notes; but later the aroma becomes poorer. Strong body, sweet and malty; the alcohol is quite hidden, but the mouth is too sweet; also the palate is not enough balanced with bitterness, and the hop aroma is quite poor. Getting warmer, it develops a deeper caramel character, evidentiating mostly in the palate. Pleasant, but nothing to be compared with a real trappist ale.

Sampling of the 1992 version in 2002: Dark amber. Aroma of berries and malt. Very malty, rich, bready, big toffee flavour. It has matured and developed better wonderfully, gone is the syrupiness, and you can't notice the alcohol. Worth waiting for...

This one certainly has a lot more going than the Blond/Enkel. Moderate aroma of oak, spices, dried fruits and English pipe tobacco (before smoking!) Delightful flavour of gently roasted malts, some yeast and spices. Moreish indeed, I hate myself for buying only one bottle! Moderate hops in the aftertaste. I'm looking forward to the Triple!

Re-rate from 0.75 bottle 25 Anniversary edition. Nutty, dark caramel, sugar, iodine aroma, light fruity estery notes. Hazy red amber, offwhite cream.Medium full body, mellow sparkly mouthfeel. Dry mineral, Weizenbock-like fruity notes, some complexity in spices, leathery/wooden finish. Preserved fruits (berries, prunes) retronasal, almond in the burps. Initially heavy and a bit rough, actually comes together nicely as it warms in its glas without losing drinkability. Overall a bit too heavy for my taste, but well put together and enjoyable nonetheless. old rating: 7 3 7 4 13 Ligth brown. Nicely balanced aroma and taste. Only a hint of alcohol in the nose. Quite easily drinkable the strength considerd.

Re-rate: ligth bronze. The honey aroma that seems to be in all La Trappe ales. Taste very similar to the dubbel, but better balanced.
