Description
Modern Times is a 30bbl production brewery and tasting room in the Point Loma neighborhood of San Diego. Modern Times is named after a beautifully crazy utopian community founded in 1850 (see “Modern Times was..” for the full explanation), and (almost) all of our beers are named after real utopian experiments or mythological utopias.

Can. Pours with a clear deep orange to light copper hued body with a small off-white head that slowly fades but leaves some good lace. Aromas are of dank floral and tropical hops with Mosaic leading the way. Lucky them that such a young brewery is able to get enough Simcoe, Nelson and even Mosaic to be able to brew this beer as a year rounder. Mild resin, lightly grainy and sweet. Flavors are fruity and citrusy with a lot of tropical notes of papaya and mango, lightly resiny. Mild malt, pretty dry. Lively carbonation, medium to low body. Quite the proper way to do an amber (which I generally despise).

Can from Bine & Vine. Pours bright copper with a slight off-white head. Lots of tropical fruit in the aroma. Med body or better. Hop burns a little. It’s largely tropical fruits - I’ll pick guava and mango - probably others, and possibly not those! Finishes fairly dry, non-bitingly bitter and quite hoppy.

Can without an indicated freshness date (would love to see them add that). Pours with a mildly hazed golden hued body with a large white head. Aromas are of tropical fruit, mango, citrus, tangelo, light resiny hops, with some crackery and toasted malt. Minimal esters. Flavors are of toasted grain, mild melanoidin like sweetness (very light), medium bitter with a slightly bitter balance, citrusy with tropical fruit. Easy drinking and quite good. Moderate carbonation, dry.

Can with thanks to Cocoapuph! Pours deep ruby black with a small brown cremay head that dissipates quickly but leaves nice lacing on the glass. Aroma is right down the middle of the fairway, roasty, ashtray, cocoa, coffee. Flavor is about the same, light sweet and light bitter, roasty coffee. Medium body. A hugely solid effort.

Really nice roasted coffee bean and chocolate aromas. I have to remind myself that this is a 5.8 % stout so the thin body isn’t a negative factor. The flavor is roasted espresso beans, chocolate and dark barley. Has a nice dry roasted finish. Simple and tasty and could be an everyday coffee stout that is real sessionable. 16 oz. can shared by Adam Jackson, thanks buddy!

Pours black but daily faint. certainly an appearance of a 6% stout. not much head. Nose is very nice. big roasted espresso with a nice milk chocolate note. Slightly harsh, lots of chocolate, bitterness of cedar and oak and just coffee for days.

16 oz. can shared by Adam Jackson. Pale gold in color light lacing head. The aroma has a good amount of citrus and tropical fruit with hints of funky Belgian yeast. The flavor has a yeasty front end with some fruit and barnyard in the finish, nicely refreshing and has a nice, easy drinkability. A nice surprise from a can, well worth a try.

Very cloudy, grassy yellow. Nose is faint. bread dough and spicy french wheat nose. Taste is nice. I get lemon juice, some wheat and very nice spicy back bone. Pretty malty with bread.

Slightly hazy golden orange pour. Nose is loaded with tropical hops and grapes. Nice taste. Very bright with orange, citrus and clementine rinds. Not a huge amount of wheat.
