0.355l can from my secret Santa 2012. This is a light cloudy deep dark chestnut-red one with a nice almost creamy looking medium sized top. On the nose it's both spicy with caramelized pickled ginger, sweet caramel, and hoppy with a nice dark fruitiness. It smells almost a bit Christmassy, and definitely interesting. It's somewhat average on the carbonation and it has a soft oily mouthfeel. More bitter than I would have imagined. Dusty straw, traces of licorice, dark slightly burned bread and a bit medicinal in the finish. Loads of things going on in this little puppy. Bitter, zesty and lingering slightly burned spicy aftertaste. I'm not quite sure, but I think I'm starting to enjoying this. 23.12.2012

Pours black into a snifter. Mocha head with little retention recedes to skim surface leaving spider lacing. Dark chocolate aromas. Dry with sweet chocolate and vanilla upfront turning to licorice before the lasting charred espresso finish.

It pours black with a big foamy lumpy dark brown one inch head. It fades slowly to a half inch leaving spectacular clingy lacing. The smell has a spectacular blend between coffee, chocolate and a little bit of vanilla. Some nice smokey/charred-ness tends to show its face in the smell. The taste takes those smells and makes it fairly sweet with some nice toastiness in the taste. The palate is about a medium with a nice dryness to be expected with the style. I’d say this is fairly drinkable. Overall, a great beer by Baxter for its style and for me. I’d come back to this.

Pours hazy amber into a shaker. Off-white head with good retention recedes leaving spot lacing. Resin and spice aromas. Full with sweet caramel and resin upfront turning dry in the vegetal spice finish. Becomes a little harsh as it warms.

Stout in a can. Pours a solid dark brown/black color with a good sized tan head that slowly dissipates to a cap. Smells of chocolate, coffee, vanilla, and roast with hint of dark sugar and ash. This has a light earthy hop aroma. The malt aromas in this are huge for the style. The flavor is bitter roast and earthy hop with bits of chocolate and caramel and a hint of vanilla, ash, and smoke. Medium to thick body with a light level of carbonation and a sweet roasty mouthfeel. I was surprised by this one its really quite good. The vanilla is subtle but it adds to the chocolate effect quite nicely.

12oz can pours a translucent garnet amber with some creamy, thick beige head. Nose is a little dusty, flower pollen, flaked wood chips, almost saw dusty, a little windex. Flavor is sweet, caramel, a little stale hops, saw dust, some lemon, orange, pine wood. Medium bodied, sweet, lightly astringent finish.

5 oz draft @The Great Lost Bear. Deep black in color with tan head that laced even in the taster glass. Nose is coffee and roasted grain. Taste follows with tons of roasted grain, chocolate malt and a touch of vanilla. Lighter body with a char and ash texture. Nice job by Baxter. Would love to have this again, quality stout.

From 12 oz. can into a lager glass. Nice presentation. Deep amber color with persistent carbonation that produced a cap of thick ¼ inch white head. Nose has fresh, vibrant hops with some fall-type spices. Flavor has a bit of graininess with decent amount of malt, followed by the spice mixture and rounded out with mild pine bitterness. The bitterness is almost IPA in nature. Malt and spice make it balanced well enough. Overall it has nice drinkability.
