Bottle @ home. The colour is clear and nice and stuff. So far, so good. If you like positive stories about beer and life in general you should stop reading here and certainly don’t look at the grade I gave this beer. If you want the truth then roll with me here.
I don’t want to offend anyone (including the brewer, my girlfriend, my girlfriends hard working family or the local cow population), but this beer smells and tastes like shit. Like literal cow poop/manure. The stuff some Dutch people call koeienstront, mest or gier.
I mean, when you smell it you get a bit of manure and you’ll tell yourself: this is one of this beers that smells farty but it’ll probably won’t taste like that. But then you’ll take a sip and discover you were udderly (get it?) wrong about it. It’s mindblowing.
Walk into a barn with cows and stuff and this is what’ll hit you. When I helped my girlfriends dad once this is exactly what it was like. This is what I experienced. I’ve tried a few sips of the beer now and I can’t shake the connection between the taste and the memories of pushing cow poo mixed with urine in between the slits in the floor, which was the job I was given that day. The only difference is the ammonia from the cow pee hit my lungs and throat too when I was there in the barn and caused a mild headache after a while, which doesn’t happen while drinking this beer. But that’s hardly something I can add positivity points for. I’m unbelievably amazed by the taste of this beer. It’s quite the experience. I have a really hard time believing no cows or any ingredients won from cows were used in the process of making this beer. I checked the label and they don’t mention it, but I’m not conviced yet. It says levure on it, which sounds a lot like manure, but comparing it to the other languages on the label it probably means yeast in English. I’m not entirely sure though. Holy cow.
It also has some goat-like flavor in it, but I must admit my real life experience with goats is pretty minimal, so I’m not too sure about that. But there’s definitely something cowy.
When Ansjelaah gets home I’m going to let her taste and ask her opinion about this. It can go both ways: she’ll either recognise it immediately or she’s still so used to being around the smell of cows that she doesn’t notice it.
(Update: The girlfriend agrees. Her words: This is what my dad smells like after milking the cows. She doesn’t hate it, but she probably got some fuzzy feelings about her childhood or something, which obviously makes her biased and therefore wrong about it not being that bad.)
Anyway, I know what I’m tasting right now and there’s no way I’m going to finish this bottle. I already took 5 sips to find the proper words for this all, which is about 4,5 sips more than one should take of a beer that tastes like this. It’s been quite the ride, but I’m also adding no positivity points for that. This is honestly the worst beer I’ve ever smelled and tasted. But to end on a positive note I will repeat that the beer sure looks nice. And the mouthfeel is pretty okay too to be honest. But maybe that’s just me being relieved that there aren’t any traces of partially digested hay in it.
So again: I’m sorry if I offended anyone, but my body and mind have made some pretty horrible connections with this beer. I didn’t want to sugercoat it, since this will probably be my lowest rating ever and therefore it deserved a proper explanation. For all of you who may have been offended by this: I’m sorry. For those people I’ll end this rating with a poem I’ve recently written.
