Victorian Craft Beer Cafe Back In Black Beer Festival 2025, Beer#2. Not quite black, this new house beer for them, but a very steady porter with good smooth dark malts.

Cask at Curious Gnome, Chester. Pours almost black with a small foamy tan head and good lacing. The aroma is mainly roasted malts with some hints of honey. In the mouth it is quite sweet, but with a little underlying bitterness. Flavour has roasted malts, chocolate and cocoa with hints of liquorice and vanilla coming later. A touch of fruitiness in the finish. This is decent.

Can from Tesco, Reading. I'm not a fan of white stouts, but bought this nevertheless to boost my numbers for the style - my god, the hardships we raters have go through! This one's a crystal-clear deep gold colour with a lasting white head. Rather a musty aroma, with hints of raspberry. Tastes of dried raspberries, raspberry pips and cheap white chocolate. The mustyness returns as some elderly lemons limp into view. The mouthfeel is decent - quite a full body, although the fizz does detract from it a little. Despite a light bitterness in the finish, it's definitely a bit too sweet. White chocolate muffins arrived in the aftertaste - specifically the slightly browned and toasty white chocolate chips sticking out of the top of the muffin. Overall - it's not too bad, but I still didn't really enjoy it and it didn't change my opinion that white stouts are a daft marketing gimmick that should never have made it further than the brainstorming session flipchart.

Enid Blyton wrote a story about a hollow tree. This hollow tree is hazy yellow-gold in appearance. It feels a little weak for this brewery, but it isn't, it's just a citrus fruity session beer, although its aftertaste is fairly bland and dryish.

440ml can from M&S Broadstairs. Pours very dark / black with a deep tan head. Aroma of unctious caramel and rich chocolate dessert. Flavour profile continues in this vein, I've always liked a nice caramel stout and this presents that nice smooth full bodied character well. However, it is labelled a caramel cookie chocolate stout, and there are no cookie notes at all, so have marked down slightly for that.

Orange-gold juicy appearance. Pulp Fusion is a series of jazz and funk albums with artwork closely resembling the Pulp Fiction film. Sweet nose, lower end sourness, strawberries abundant. Interesting.

Gold with a foamy, white head. Aroma of raspberry syrup and vanilla. Taste is bitter with a sweet underside. Chemical bitter and strongly medicinal finish, but I doubt this is curing much apart from a weakness at not better reading the can labels before buying. At least it feels good on the tongue, silky smooth and chewy. Not a fan of this, or white stouts in general.

Citrus and tropical fruity medley, getting notes of pineapple and grapefruit, orange, papaya, some sweet malts, medium to light body, light bitter hoppy finish. Ok supermarket brew.
