Description
A story that’s been brewing for some time
Immortalised in the name of one of Fuller’s famous ales, 1845 is a year that will forever be synonymous with Fuller, Smith & Turner. It was then that the partnership papers between the three families were officially signed, marking the start of something very special for London’s pub and beer scene.
However, the Fuller’s story had been brewing long before then.
Beer and pub have played a role in this part of the capital for more than 350 years, dating back to the era of Oliver Cromwell. Back then, pubs were plentiful in number and, in addition, it was quite common for large households to brew their own beer.
In the late 1600s, one such private brewhouse was in the gardens of Bedford House on Chiswick Mall. Another, a far humbler concern, was operating nearby at the cottage of Thomas Urlin.
When Urlin died, the property passed to his widow and son-in-law, a gentleman named Thomas Mawson, who stepped in to take up the reigns as manager. It was he who laid the foundations for a major brewing enterprise – buying The George public house and two adjoining cottages for £70, then later snapping up the brewhouse on Bedford House too.
Thomas Mawson is still honoured today through The Mawson Arms, the pub located at the original brewery site.

Bottles from Waitrose (2014 and 2025). Clear amber/ruby body with no head. Steady carbonation. No lacing. Aroma of caramel, honey and wood. Flavour of stewed fruits, earth and warming spices - it tastes like a rich Belgian beer. Medium body with a slick texture. Light fizz. This is very nice - a rich, warming beer.

Очень добротный эль, есть янтарная карамель, патока приятная, умеренная сладость. Некая аристократическая нотка алкогольная на финише.

Cheeky half at the Butchers Hook and Cleaver in Smithfield. Had to be done. Good pour and looks magnificent in the glass. The taste was all rich and quite sweet malts. Maybe a touch too sweet for me? Anyway, I quibble becausethe mouthfeel is fantastic. This is a very good beer and beautifully executed.

Cask at The Iron Duke.in a fancy 180th anniversary mug. It pours clear amber with a fluffy off - white head. The aroma is toasty grains husks, cereal, earthy, woody, toasted nut, muted sweetness, some dried berry, brown bread and hint of sulphur on the back end. The taste is firmly dry, woody bitterness which builds and lingers, earthy, slight resin, toothy, toasty grains, cereal, toasted nut, floral accents, brown bread, biscuit and some spice with a toasty, drying lingering finale. Average body and moderate cask carbonation. Truly old school in flavour profile, but well executed. Probably not for the haze boiiis, but I like it.

Near clear deep amber brown beer, small pale tan head. Light palate, mildly dry, good fine minerally carbonation. Slightly tangy and light bodied dark malts. Caramel, a little treacle, smooth if mild dark chocolate. Ripe dark fruits, prune, mild date and very ripe citrus. Light finish. A light but very quaffable porter.

Faint smell of plum. Copper colour, small beige head. Aroma of sweet malt, dried fruit, some sweet alcohol note. Soft carbon. Sweet. Not the best vintage ale, but still damn solid.
