Description
A story that’s been brewing for some time
Immortalised in the name of one of Fuller’s famous ales, 1845 is a year that will forever be synonymous with Fuller, Smith & Turner. It was then that the partnership papers between the three families were officially signed, marking the start of something very special for London’s pub and beer scene.
However, the Fuller’s story had been brewing long before then.
Beer and pub have played a role in this part of the capital for more than 350 years, dating back to the era of Oliver Cromwell. Back then, pubs were plentiful in number and, in addition, it was quite common for large households to brew their own beer.
In the late 1600s, one such private brewhouse was in the gardens of Bedford House on Chiswick Mall. Another, a far humbler concern, was operating nearby at the cottage of Thomas Urlin.
When Urlin died, the property passed to his widow and son-in-law, a gentleman named Thomas Mawson, who stepped in to take up the reigns as manager. It was he who laid the foundations for a major brewing enterprise – buying The George public house and two adjoining cottages for £70, then later snapping up the brewhouse on Bedford House too.
Thomas Mawson is still honoured today through The Mawson Arms, the pub located at the original brewery site.

Bottled. Pours deep brown colur with quickly disappearing beige head. Coffee, cocoa and roasted notes in aroma. Basically it has the same notes in aroma, combined with slight smoky/woody notes. It finishes with moderate bitterness and with warming some very slight alcoholic notes also appear. Softly carbonated and medium bodied with a creamy mouthfeel. Nice one.

0.5 l bottle @ home. Pours mahogany with beige head. Nose is spicey and malty, taste is quite similar with some surprisingly apparent bitter hops in the finish. Light to medium body, average carbo. Not bad, but nothing extraordinary either.

Bottle @ home. Pours deep, clear copper with thin, quickly disappearing head. Nose is typical English ale-like, something I can’t really describe. In taste it’s mainly sweet, with hints of grains but there are some hops in there too. Closes with bittersweet finish, has soft carbo and light to medium body.

Bottle picked up from Waitrose. Consumed at home Sunday 2nd March 2025 after a 14-15 km loop hike in glorious sunshine to two local hills Plattnstoa 864m & Fürberg 880m then to our local Gasthof zum Sonnewald, Schöfweg for a beer. We had a Thomasina Miers Chilli tonight for tea, it was fantastic. Pours chestnut maybe lighter, there is a rubyness to this, the head disappeared swiftly, sticks to the side. Initially a little sweet, but after 5-10 mins in the glass it opens up, it’s actually quite tangy, there’s some marmalade, a little molasses, it’s a very decent Vintage but I think it needs to soften and mellow a little more, a couple of years in the bottle and I’d be interested to try it again, I purchased two further bottles. ,
