Description
A story that’s been brewing for some time
Immortalised in the name of one of Fuller’s famous ales, 1845 is a year that will forever be synonymous with Fuller, Smith & Turner. It was then that the partnership papers between the three families were officially signed, marking the start of something very special for London’s pub and beer scene.
However, the Fuller’s story had been brewing long before then.
Beer and pub have played a role in this part of the capital for more than 350 years, dating back to the era of Oliver Cromwell. Back then, pubs were plentiful in number and, in addition, it was quite common for large households to brew their own beer.
In the late 1600s, one such private brewhouse was in the gardens of Bedford House on Chiswick Mall. Another, a far humbler concern, was operating nearby at the cottage of Thomas Urlin.
When Urlin died, the property passed to his widow and son-in-law, a gentleman named Thomas Mawson, who stepped in to take up the reigns as manager. It was he who laid the foundations for a major brewing enterprise – buying The George public house and two adjoining cottages for £70, then later snapping up the brewhouse on Bedford House too.
Thomas Mawson is still honoured today through The Mawson Arms, the pub located at the original brewery site.

Black with rathershort lived, bubbly off-white head. Rich aroma dominated by caramel, licorice, malt and coffee. Flavour continues the coffee theme, with lots of bitterness, a hint of smoke and a long aftertaste of chocolate and coffee.

Dark amber color. Off-white creamy medium head. Same time fruity and crisp. Full-bodied: lots of hops, malt and hints of honey. Finish is dry but pleasant. You can't get better bitter than this!

Bottled: Just as wonderful. Still has the pleasant velvet creamy mouthfeel and most of the rich aroma and flavour.

Cask conditioned at the Blackbird, Earls Court, London (a Fuller's pub). Served at cellar temperature, minimal natural carbonation, low head. Golden to amber colour. Moderate citrussy aroma, hints of horse stable. Light bodied, decent bitterness. A nice little beer this one, but nothing to knock your socks off. (I admit I really wanted the ESB, but ratings are ratings!)

Deep, reddish brown in color, with a frothy, tan head, nice lace - aroma of yeast, chocolate - flavor is initially bitter, almost tart - bitterness subsides and flavors of bread (or pastry) and some subtle notes of dark fruit - chalky texture that is quite unenjoyable - finish tastes like I imagine cola without the sugar added would taste - nothing special.

Bottle - Poured a deep black brew with a nice head but lack some retention. Carbonation is average with a medium body (I was expecting a richer and ''fuller'' body). Aroma of chocolate is very subtle. Taste is a mix of roastiness, chocolate, and coffee with just enough bitterness at the end. Overall, this is a good beer but I still believe it might be a bit overrated.

This a rich bronze colored beer. Complex malty aroma with notes of caramel. The malty complexity is echoed in the flavor which finishes somewhat dry. Very well done ESB.

A pretty beer if lacking in other areas. Perhaps Blonde Ales just aren't my thing. Thin beers do better for me with a slightly bitter bite and this one is sweet caramel. A good choice if you don't want any mouthfeel in your beer.

Medium slightly tanned head. Beautiful clear amber colour. Aroma is brown sugar and toffee. Sweet malty taste with some caramel. Some bitterness with hops in the end. Very drinkable just needs a little bit more body to be very classy beer. (7/4/8/4/16 3.9)
Re-rated, bottled (BB 01/2006)
Golden copper color, small off-white head. Flowery English hops in a nose, a bit dunky. Medium-bodied, very flowery with hints of toffee. Nice hoppy aftertaste. (5/3/7/4/13 3.2)

Nice amber ale with small, but fluffy head. It goes away quickly. Nice, slightly sweet summertime smell... very refreshing! Bittersweet taste, slightly floral, but a bit of a copper (taste your fingers after counting change) aftertaste. Nice mouthfeel. A bit thick and heavy to drink a lot of.
