Description
A story that’s been brewing for some time
Immortalised in the name of one of Fuller’s famous ales, 1845 is a year that will forever be synonymous with Fuller, Smith & Turner. It was then that the partnership papers between the three families were officially signed, marking the start of something very special for London’s pub and beer scene.

However, the Fuller’s story had been brewing long before then.

Beer and pub have played a role in this part of the capital for more than 350 years, dating back to the era of Oliver Cromwell. Back then, pubs were plentiful in number and, in addition, it was quite common for large households to brew their own beer.

In the late 1600s, one such private brewhouse was in the gardens of Bedford House on Chiswick Mall. Another, a far humbler concern, was operating nearby at the cottage of Thomas Urlin.

When Urlin died, the property passed to his widow and son-in-law, a gentleman named Thomas Mawson, who stepped in to take up the reigns as manager. It was he who laid the foundations for a major brewing enterprise – buying The George public house and two adjoining cottages for £70, then later snapping up the brewhouse on Bedford House too.

Thomas Mawson is still honoured today through The Mawson Arms, the pub located at the original brewery site.

Aroma of wood and smoke. Appearance is cloudy brown, with a medium sized but thin head. Very sweet at room temperature. Flavors of tobacco, wood, and bread. Very heavy. Reminded me of a powerful Belgian ale. --- Beer merged from original tick of Vintage Ale (2000) on 27 Aug 2018 at 17:24 - Score: 9. Original review text: Ratebeer. 10/31/03. The dominant aroma is of roasted malt, reminds of the aroma of a dry stout like Beamish. Minor aroma of red wine. Black with a red tint in the light. The head is small but thick and leaves a heavy lace on the glass. Several flavors, most prominent is the roasted malt again. Also coffee, some chocolate, and fruit. Unfortunately, all of these flavors seem to be holding back. This beer is thiner than I would like. Still very good, but maybe not 99th percentile good.

Draft. Nioce coper color with a decent head. This beer always seems a bit thick to me. The alcohol makes an appearance at the end, but I don't think it 'takes over' - just noticeable. Otherwise a fairly malty beer with some good hop flavor, but not overly bitter.

2012-11-08, draught at Locus Publicus, Rotterdam, 7-5-6-3-13=34
Clean amber color, creamy head. Some caramel aroma and flavor; very moderate sweetness; ordinary bitterness, a bit of nutty touch. Not as rich as the bottle I remembered.

Beautiful, bright dark amber color, with generous creamy head. The aroma is malty but also simple, with nuts and tones of vegetables. Good body strength, with moderate sweetness; malt and caramel flavor, decent, unfortunately followed by some vegetables and alcohol; it ends with correct bitterness and a hint of nuts, also with alcohol warmth.
Too much.

Amber color; poor head. Nice malt aroma, strong; wood, cellar. Warming, malty, loads of caramel; very good structure. Powerful. Of course not as much complex as the Vintage Ale, but I liked it…

The aroma is a nice sweet malty and hoppy one. The color is amber and it has a beutiful head. The flavor is sweet and hoppy with notes of fruit and grass. It doesn't have bite enough for an IPA. The ends is more grassy, than it is bitter.

Clear redbrown color, medium/short head. Typical english malty hops aroma. Taste is heavy alcohol and sweet caramel malts, with an intense alcohol burn. I guess i better wait for an english beer with refermentation in the bottle, because this is just crap.

Bottle. Nice amber colour, with a mild maltiness but i felt it did not match up to the draft version of it. Not enough mouthfeel. Note the bottle was left at room temperature for at least 4 months.

[Sampled October 11, 2003] The aroma is sweet and very complex with notes of plums, alcohol, fruit and sligt earth. The color is amber and it has a beutiful though disappearing head. The flavor is great; a nice sweetness with notes of plums, wood, fruits, figs, and slight hints of the alcohol. This is a great beer - that has aged very well.
