Description
Big Sky Brewing Company was started by Neal Leathers, Bjorn Nabozney, and Brad Robinson. Brad and Neal had been homebrewers in Michigan since the mid 1980’s, and had moved to Missoula with a group of friends in the summer of 1990. In 1993 they started to set up a brewery. After about a year and a half, Big Sky Brewing Company had enough cash in the bank and a large enough bank loan to begin purchasing equipment and renovating its original location at 120-A Hickory Street. We brewed our first batch of beer in mid-June of 1995.

The company was a draft only brewery (no bottled beer) for its first five and a half years. We brewed everything on Hickory Street, but we realized that to really become a regional player we had to find a way to put our beer into bottles. in early 2002 we broke ground on a new brewery on Trumpeter Way just north of Missoula’s airport. We began brewing in the new brewery in September of 2002 and started bottling our beer there in January of 2003. Since then, we have been where we always wanted to be, brewing and packaging all of our beer right here in Missoula.

Bottle, thanks to HuskerTan. Pours dark brown with reddish tint against the light, large foamy light beige head, faint roasted malt aroma, adequate carbonation, mildly bitter roasted malt taste, thin body, longish finish. Nice brew.

12 oz can poured. Every Big Sky beer I enjoy reminds me that I really need to take the weekend trip to see the great state of Montana for the first time. Golden orange pour with a soft haze, and a gushing foam head. About a 10 minute differential between cracking this and actually enjoying the first sip. Very nice aroma full of juicy grapefruit notes. Has plenty of juice character, without it falling into that juicy IPA category. Sounds weird, but I know what I mean. Classic IPA feel, with plenty of juicy grapefruit lingering. Smooth body to this, a touch creamier than the usual IPA. A few things make this one different, and special in my opinion. Very nice drinking IPA here. Enjoyed this one.

12 ounce bottle into pint glass, bottled on 1/25/2018. Pours slightly hazy pale golden yellow color with a 1-2 finger dense and rocky white head with great retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice dense soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of tangerine, grapefruit, lemon, peach, pineapple, passion fruit, papaya, mango, melon, citrus peel/zest, light pepper/pine, cracker, white bread, herbal, and floral/grassy earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of citrus/fruity/tropical hops and moderate pale malt notes; with great strength. Taste of big tangerine, grapefruit, lemon, peach, pineapple, passion fruit, papaya, mango, melon, citrus peel/zest, light pepper, pine, cracker, white bread, herbal, and floral/grassy earthiness. Light-moderate pine, citrus peel, herbal, grassy, spicy bitterness on the finish. Lingering notes of tangerine, grapefruit, lemon, peach, pineapple, passion fruit, papaya, mango, melon, citrus peel/zest, pepper, pine, cracker, white bread, and herbal/floral/grassy earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Great complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/fruity/tropical hops and moderate pale malt flavors; with an awesome malt/bitterness balance, and zero lingering hop astringency after the finish. Light-moderate increasing dryness from bitterness. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, moderately crisp, bready/grainy/sticky, and slightly resinous balance mouthfeel that is great. Zero warming alcohol as expected of 5%. Overall this is an excellent American pale ale. All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/fruity/tropical hops and moderate pale malt flavors; very smooth, crisp, and refreshing to drink with the modestly bitter/drying finish, never aggressive. Very vibrant and dank balanced Galaxy hop complexity; solid malt backbone, with minimal residual sweetness. Great hop showcase. A very enjoyable offering, and spot on style example.

12 oz bottle from a six pack, from the grocery store. Aroma is earthy, peppery, floral, hint of garbage. Pours slightly hazy golden with a collapsing off-white head that falls into a big-bubbly ring pretty quick. Taste is lightly bitter, lightly sweet, finishing dry with light grapefruit hop and light bready malt character. Very simple pale ale that tastes good, but doesn't smell all that great. Overall, it's a good beer that I'd buy again.

12 ounce bottle from Binny's Lincoln Park. 2015 vintage. Opened in honor of the too soon departed BBB63. Black, large foamy, kinda fizzy, tan head. Good retention. Aroma of strong roast, vanilla, booze, leather, a bit of stone fruit. Taste is roasted malt, booze, raisin, chocolate, vanilla. A little hot, but not offensively so. Big, full bodied, chewy
