Description
Big Sky Brewing Company was started by Neal Leathers, Bjorn Nabozney, and Brad Robinson. Brad and Neal had been homebrewers in Michigan since the mid 1980’s, and had moved to Missoula with a group of friends in the summer of 1990. In 1993 they started to set up a brewery. After about a year and a half, Big Sky Brewing Company had enough cash in the bank and a large enough bank loan to begin purchasing equipment and renovating its original location at 120-A Hickory Street. We brewed our first batch of beer in mid-June of 1995.

The company was a draft only brewery (no bottled beer) for its first five and a half years. We brewed everything on Hickory Street, but we realized that to really become a regional player we had to find a way to put our beer into bottles. in early 2002 we broke ground on a new brewery on Trumpeter Way just north of Missoula’s airport. We began brewing in the new brewery in September of 2002 and started bottling our beer there in January of 2003. Since then, we have been where we always wanted to be, brewing and packaging all of our beer right here in Missoula.

355ml bottle. (9.7% ABV) Pours a hazy orange with a small, creamy, short lived, white head that laces. Sweet aroma of wheat malt, caramel, peach, booze and oak. Sweet flavour of wheat malt, caramel, peach, honey, sugar, vanilla, oak and a hint of citrus with warming booze in the finish. Medium to full body with an oily texture and soft carbonation. Not bad.

Purchased as part of a sampler pack.

This beer pours from 12oz bottle a clear deep amber with a 1 finger head of foam that shrinks to some spotting and a ring around the glass.

The smell has notes of caramel malt and a bit of spice.

The taste has a good caramel malt flavour up front followed by a bit of spice and some citrus hops and an earthy backbone that kind of throws the flavours out of whack. A few more sips in and that earthy flavour now dominates the flavour; too bad because I think this had potential to be a good winter ale and pretty darned drinkable but as is, I won't look for it again. Pretty messy, imho.

Purchased at Liquor Shed in Casper

This pours a clear gold with a small head of foam that shrinks quickly to a few islands in the middle and it has some lacing.

The smell has some sweet malt, fruitiness, and grain in the nose.

The taste is grainy with some malt tones and a bit of fruit and a good wheat taste. It finishes on the dry side, has a light mouthfeel and medium carbo. Pretty quaffable and not a bad brew. I'd buy it from time to time....

Poured a clear gold with a very good head that persisted.

The smell was at first, all hops but then I noticed some malt there as well

The taste is a nice balance of malt and hops with a grapefruity note. A lot of flavour for an APA and that's a good thing because I know I'll buy this one again.

Crisp, ever so slightly hazy light copper and peach coloured body with a thinnish, single centimetre tall off-white head. Aroma of bitter pine and especially grapefruit hops with a nice malt presence, some lighter grassy and herbal notes and a finish of mellow sugars from fruit. Light to Medium-bodied; Assertive tropical fruity hoppiness with a mellow grapefruit and citrus note and a smooth bitterness, all from the hops of course, with a nice robust sweetness from fruit and a perfectly balanced malt backbone with a smidgen of alcohol noticeable. Aftertaste shows mostly bitter qualities from the hops, but a little sweetness and dry flavours are evident as well, but the cascade and newer hybrid and/or Oz/NZ hops are evident in this one in a very good way. Overall, a very nice IPA with a robust bitterness and smooth complexity throughout with a touch of sweetness from tropical and citrus fruit on the very end and a bit of alcohol warmth to make this feel like a real IPA. I sampled this twelve ounce can purchased just 9 days ago at BeerTopia in Omaha, Nebraska on 01-October-2017 for US$1,67 sampled at home in Washington on 10-October-2017.

Slightly hazy medium golden colour, small soapy white head, mostly diminishing, light lacing. Aroma wheat, pine, bit citrus, light yeast, grass. Flavour light to medium sweet and bitter, malty, light wheat and fruit. Medium body, oily texture, average carbonation, dry aftertaste, bit chalky and light herbs. Not your typical wheat ale but refreshing and well-balanced.
