Description
Big Sky Brewing Company was started by Neal Leathers, Bjorn Nabozney, and Brad Robinson. Brad and Neal had been homebrewers in Michigan since the mid 1980’s, and had moved to Missoula with a group of friends in the summer of 1990. In 1993 they started to set up a brewery. After about a year and a half, Big Sky Brewing Company had enough cash in the bank and a large enough bank loan to begin purchasing equipment and renovating its original location at 120-A Hickory Street. We brewed our first batch of beer in mid-June of 1995.
The company was a draft only brewery (no bottled beer) for its first five and a half years. We brewed everything on Hickory Street, but we realized that to really become a regional player we had to find a way to put our beer into bottles. in early 2002 we broke ground on a new brewery on Trumpeter Way just north of Missoula’s airport. We began brewing in the new brewery in September of 2002 and started bottling our beer there in January of 2003. Since then, we have been where we always wanted to be, brewing and packaging all of our beer right here in Missoula.

On tap. Pours black with moderate creamy nitro head. Aromas of creamy chocolate and roasted malts. Flavors of dry dark chocolate, creamy coffee, nuts and dark roasted malts. Very dry; the nitro is a good match. --- Beer merged from original tick of Ivan the Terrible Imperial Stout - Bourbon Barrel on 22 Dec 2019 at 03:12 - Score: Appearance - 6 | Aroma - 7 | Flavor - 7 | Texture - 4 | Overall - 5.5. Original review text: 750 ml bottle. 2019 vintage. 10.1% Pours a very dark brown with moderate fizzy head. Aroma of raisins, sour mash, and sweet toasted malts. Flavors of oak, booze, hardtack, sugary raisins and toasted malts. Acidic and a little vegetal in the finish. Base stout may not be a good match to the barrel. Or maybe a bad bottle. Poor quality for the price.

The alcohol comes through quite intensely. Low bitterness, pretty clean, but not a lot of greatness going on, somewhat bland and lacking complexity, but still a decent beer. 2017 advent calendar

(Bottle) Pours black with tiny tan head. Nice aroma - toffee, chocolate, raisins, smokey notes. Great palate - full bodied, oily with some stickiness and gentle soft carbonation. Great taste too - there's plenty of toffee / molasses sweetness overlaid with dried fruit at the start and some decent bitterness in the finish. Very nice.

Golden color. Mild aroma, some alcohol. The malt profile is delicate, the sweetness is mild, so not cloying, and it may have a touch of honey.
Not bad.

Amber, with just a touch of haze. Not much head. Heavy nose, definitely some phenols on that, boozy and I'm not getting a lot of malt character. Has a sticky, fruity, peachy, apricotty...actually the fruits on the palate are quite bright. Sticky happy sugars...this is totally a different beer on the palate than on the nose, and much, much better.

12 oz. bottle, pours a hazy golden with a small white head. Aroma has light honey, apple juice, booze and caramel. Flavour is quite boozy, with caramel, apple juice, and a touch of honey. Lots of heat here, but it works well enough. Solid stuff.
