Description
Big Sky Brewing Company was started by Neal Leathers, Bjorn Nabozney, and Brad Robinson. Brad and Neal had been homebrewers in Michigan since the mid 1980’s, and had moved to Missoula with a group of friends in the summer of 1990. In 1993 they started to set up a brewery. After about a year and a half, Big Sky Brewing Company had enough cash in the bank and a large enough bank loan to begin purchasing equipment and renovating its original location at 120-A Hickory Street. We brewed our first batch of beer in mid-June of 1995.

The company was a draft only brewery (no bottled beer) for its first five and a half years. We brewed everything on Hickory Street, but we realized that to really become a regional player we had to find a way to put our beer into bottles. in early 2002 we broke ground on a new brewery on Trumpeter Way just north of Missoula’s airport. We began brewing in the new brewery in September of 2002 and started bottling our beer there in January of 2003. Since then, we have been where we always wanted to be, brewing and packaging all of our beer right here in Missoula.

Poured from 12 fl oz bottle (2016). Jet black with small tan head. Lots of roast malt with some sweet chocolate notes and subtle coffee. Feintest hint of bourbon on the finish. Fairly good.

355ml can. Pours a clear pale yellow with a small, frothy, long lasting, off-white head that laces nicely. Mild aroma of caramel malt and honey. Sweet flavour of caramel malt and honey with a dry, mildly bitter grass finish. Light body with a watery texture and soft carbonation. Not bad, just boring.

355ml bottle. Clear, yellow-ish golden colour with average, frothy, half-way lasting, minimally lacing, white head. Minimally perfumed, grassy, and minimally piney, hoppy aroma, cautious German Kristallweizen-like, wheaty background. Taste is grassy, piney, minimally perfumed hoppy, spicy hints of fresh hay, a citrusy lemon dash, cautious wheaty, again Kristallweizen-like basis. Not overly intense, but well balanced, deliberate, well matching hop selection.

Clear golden colour with lasting head. Aroma has a slightly toasted note. Otherwise it’s floral and lightly hoppy. Nicely dry.

From the bottle, also at the Beartooth Cafe in Cooke City. Pours brown and leaves a thick, foamy head. Aroma is nutty. Taste is sweet, nutty, with a light apple tang near the finish. Dragged down by light metallic notes, but otherwise good.

At Beartooth Cafe, Cooke City. Pours hazy dark amber/brown with a diminishing, brown head. The aroma contains caramel, malt, hay, hops and bread. It tastes medium sweet and light bitter with a dry finish. Medium body, slick texture, fizzy carbonation. Drinkable yet nothing special.
