Description
Big Sky Brewing Company was started by Neal Leathers, Bjorn Nabozney, and Brad Robinson. Brad and Neal had been homebrewers in Michigan since the mid 1980’s, and had moved to Missoula with a group of friends in the summer of 1990. In 1993 they started to set up a brewery. After about a year and a half, Big Sky Brewing Company had enough cash in the bank and a large enough bank loan to begin purchasing equipment and renovating its original location at 120-A Hickory Street. We brewed our first batch of beer in mid-June of 1995.

The company was a draft only brewery (no bottled beer) for its first five and a half years. We brewed everything on Hickory Street, but we realized that to really become a regional player we had to find a way to put our beer into bottles. in early 2002 we broke ground on a new brewery on Trumpeter Way just north of Missoula’s airport. We began brewing in the new brewery in September of 2002 and started bottling our beer there in January of 2003. Since then, we have been where we always wanted to be, brewing and packaging all of our beer right here in Missoula.

This brown ale brings out the roasted grains, with a healthy dollop of brown sugar for sweetness. Dark brown with thin beige head, coffee-ish aroma, with some molasses. Taste is first bitter, then sweet, in that order. Finish is abrupt and slightly dry/chalky.

750 ml bottle into chalice; 2012 vintage, bottle 1099 of 3240. Pours hazy golden amber color with a small white head with poor retention, that reduces to a minimal lace cap. Minimal glass lacing, with some light streaming carbonation. Aromas of pear, apple, grape, clove, herbal, pepper, floral, wheat, bread, candi sugar, and yeast earthiness. Ok aromas with decent balance and complexity of malt and yeast notes; with good strength. Taste of pear, apple, grape, clove, pepper, wheat, bread, herbal, floral, grass, and yeast earthiness. Lingering notes of light fruits, clove, pepper, herbal, grass, floral, bread, wheat, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Solid balance and complexity of yeast and malt flavors; with no cloying sweetness after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a moderately slick and fairly crisp mouthfeel that is good. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a slight warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is a pretty solid Tripel style. Decent balance and complexity of fruity/spicy yeast esters with bready malts; and fairly smooth to sip on. A fairly enjoyable offering.

Flavor carries much the same traits as the aroma with some dried fruits thrown in for good measure.

750 c&c from Malt & Vine. Pours orange/copper with a 3 finger foamy beige head. Aroma is sweet (like malt but not quite). Med body. Flavor is not really brown sugar. It’s not exactly malty. Very tasty - but more like a light meade than a "barley" wine. Less than dry, but not overly sugary. Finishes in a pleasant way.

3rd Feb 2013, Super Bowl day: pint into a plastic cup in ’Jacks bar in the Cannery’ (San Fransisco). Dark ruby body (the bar was dark too), thin tanned head. Mild chocolate notes in the malty nose. The taste was also chocolate and malty with a semi-sweet undertone throughout the tasting. Body was fine for the flavours and alcohol level, I enjoyed it, even in a plastic cup!

On tap at Tapwerks. Pours a near clear gold with a large white head that lasts throughout the beer and laces nicely. Aroma has a good amount of earthy grain and grass with a bit of resin and earthy fruit. Flavor starts with sweet grain and light fruits with a good amount of grass hops underlying.
