Description
Brasserie de Silly NV is still family-owned and is now in the hands of the sixth generation of the same family. The company is managed by cousins, Lionel and Bertrand Van der Haegen. Bertrand is responsible for production and Lionel looks after sales. Their parents, brothers Jean-Paul and Didier Van der Haegen are still active Board members. Brasserie de Silly has seen steady growth thanks to export sales and its quality image. Production in 2008 was 1,000,000 litres, but in 2018, 2,500,000 litres are expected to flow out of the tanks. Sales are on the up and up. Belgian beers produced in a traditional way are increasingly popular around the globe.

A hazy dark amber beer with a huge off-white head. The aroma is sweet with notes of yeast, coriander, and oranges with a very slight sour tinge. The flavor is sweet yet a little sour with a metal tinge. The sweet/sour combination reminds me of a Flemish Sour Ale. The flavor contains notes of yeast and coriander and leads to a very dry spicy end.

Hazy copper orange with tanned decent head. Lively carbonation. Fresh aroma of fruits and hops and maybe a hint of alcohol. Medium-bodied, portwineous palate. Flavour is herbal hoppy leaving hoppy bitter aftertaste. Hides ABV well.

A clear orange beer with a huge off-white head. The aroma is very sweet with notes of yeast, coriander, and oranges. The flavor is sweet, very smooth, slightly spicy combined with oranges - after awhile the sweetness is almost too much, but then a pleasant dry end sets in.

Botted (BB 11/09/04)
Golden, a bit hazy, decent white head, lace. Hoppy, slightly alcoholic and spicey/herbal nose. Medium to full-bodied warming brew. Toffee sweetness (which seems to be a trademark of Silly beers) and grapefruit bitterness. Alcoholic kick in the finish with some hoppy bitterness. (6/2/7/3/12 3.0)
Re-rated bottle (BB 08/2008)
Golden color, huge Duvel-like head. Fruity, sweet, slightly hoppy aroma in the nose, some alcohol too. Alcoholic, fruity and citric flavor. Long bitter aftertaste. Not very Christmasy. (6/3/7/3/12 3.1)

A blonde tripel colour, and a big white head. Pilsner malt, pineapple, citrus in the nose. Initially sweet, a touch of anise, finishes alcohol heavy, and rather chalky. Very refreshing for a Christmas brew.

Clear red amber color with small but steady off-white head, lace. Aroma has yeast, sugar, wheat and cinnamon. Flavor is par to aroma: like drinking Grandma’s bakings with alcoholic touch. Full-bodied - drink it slowly -brew.

Bottle. Bready, almost pilsner-like aroma. Hint of fruit, though. Flavour is at first full, malty and yeasty, but then it turns a bit metallic. Colour is slightly cloudy yellow. Everything about this beer reminds me of pils, except the fruityness.

I have never heard of this beer before. But it was a new Belgian selection at the Sharp Edge in Pittsburgh so I decided to try a draft. The waitress described it as "beer candy" and that description really hit the mark. It poured a light caramel color with a small white head. The aroma was sweet toffee and butterscotch. The flavor was overwhelmingly sweet butterscotch and toffee. The butterscotch lingers. Overall is so thoroughly sweet and candy like that I found the draft hard to finish. Very nice on the first sip, but my rating kept dropping as I got further down the glass.

One of my wife’s favorites though we have not seen it around in quite a while. +++Sampled from an 11.2 oz brown bottle the beer poured an opaque mahogany color with a large tan head. The aroma was sweet with strong elements of caramel and molasses and just a hint of ripe fruit. The flavor was malty and sweet with noted molasses and caramel elements. A bit of toasted roasty malt flavor on the finish. A nice Scotch Ale.
