Description
Renaissance brewing was established in 2005 when experienced brewers Andy Deuchars and Brian Thiel purchased the lease on the historic Grove Mill in Blenheim. Andy and Brian, both natives of Southern California, had one goal in mind - to produce stunning beers in a region more renowned for the excellence of its wines. We are committed to using local ingredients and are one of the pioneers of craft brewing in New Zealand.

Single at the LCBO with a neck label written, Silver Australian International Beer Awards 2010. Pours a slightly hazy golden-amber colour with a bubbly head that disappears quickly, but has a little lacing, here and there. The nose seems off-balanced, with some light hops at first which are good, but then, this big cereal puff comes up, and seems all over. A mix of caramel malts with dark fruits and other aromas that don’t blend very well. The taste is pretty much the same. Maybe a got a bad bottle, but I am not a fan of this one.

Bottle: Poured a clear golden color ale with a large foamy head with average retention and some lacing. Aroma of dry British Fuggles hops with light fruity notes form the Kiwi hops. Taste is also a mix between the dry hoppy notes of Fuggles and some fruity ester from their kiwi hops with light grainy non-descript malt base. Body is a bit light for style with OK carbonation. Too much Fuggles for my own taste.

From a 500ml bottle (batch 313, BB 7/2014, shared by Butz with thanks). ABV is listed as 6.5% not 4.9%. Pours a very dark brown with a smallish head. Has quite a strong aroma of dark chocolate with a touch of roasted malt. The flavour is lots of dark bitter sweet chocolate, a good dash of cocoa, and a medium roasty bitterness. Moderate carbonation and medium body. Very nice stuff.

A malt heavy pale ale along the English style more than American. Finishes malty sour. Not a great deal going on here. Bottle.

Bottle from Corti Bros. Pours very dark brown with a foamy 3 finger frothy light tan head. Nice aroma of dark milk chocolate with a hop hit. Med body - less as froth goes. Not the best impression there. The flavor is now bitter chocolate - there seems to be a lot of hop in here. Touch of coffee. I’m not sure this works all that well. Lots of flavor - but harsh - and hoppy chocolate? It is growing on me. Seeing it finishing dry, bitter and chocolate. Ok. I’m convinced.

50cl bottle pours with a dark brown to deep ruby red body that supports a half inch tall tan head. The aroma offers up prunes, brown sugar, earthy goodness, boysenberries and a touch of ripe cherry meat. The taste begins with caramel sweetness and then quickly heads toward dates and prunes and molasses. Behind those notes is a pleasing earthiness that binds everything together. This is a bit thin but offers up a pleasing level of richness and depth. Nice, a pretty solid Scotch Ale.

Pours burnished copper with a fading head.Aroma of sultanas, burnt figs, fruit cake and brown sugar. Nice!Flavours are not as great. Some of the fruit is still there but then it falls short quickly.Body feels a bit watery.

Ok, but I’m struggling even to remember anything about this beer the morning after I had it, which means it really made little impression. Pours orange with ok head and lacing. Some hops on nose with a lot of malt. English-style light-style IPA. Finishes a little bitter. Bottle.

Ok. Has a fruity nose with some malt - well-integrated together. Pours with a foamy head with nice lacing. Dark red clear colour. Finishes bitter with some astringency. Kind of peters out after initial aroma. Booze in the aroma as well. Bottle.
