Cask at the Great Expectations, Reading. An opaque mahogany pour with a reddish gleam and a thin beige head; aroma of winter spice; rather thin in the mouth, but with a pleasant Christmas pudding taste - raisins & spices; then a dry peppery finish.

Cask at the Great Expectations, Reading. Rather lively - I was told it had only just been put on - a straw colour, slightly hazy, with a thin white head; aroma of orchard fruit; taste of apple and blackberry - quite tart; and a clean bready finish. Not bad.

Cask at Great Expectations - Reading. Pours clear, orange-gold with a creamy, off-white head. Grainy pale bread in the nose, slight citrus peel. Light sweet flavor with more grainy pale malts, a little hay, vague toffee, light plastic, wood. Light bodied with fine carbonation; so so condition. Lightly astringent on the finish, with notes of leafy hops, damp grains, cheap bread, dirty hay. Not very enjoyable.

Cask at the brewpub - Reading. Pours clear yellow-gold with a creamy white head. There’s a little tangy citrus in the nose, wet pale grains, lemon peel, plastic. Light sweet flavor with soggy white bread, husky grains, hay, dough. Light bodied with soft carbonation; not in great condition. Finishes with some buttery dough, white bread, straw, faint grass. Quite poor.

Cask at Great Expectations, Reading. Amber with a middling white head. Fruity malts throughout. Sweetish but with a touch of earthy bitterness. Decent traditional bitter.

Cask at Great Expectations, Reading. Golden-amber with a thin white head. A little lemon up front then soap and cheap slimy caramel follow. Lightly sharp and sour. Not a pleasant experience. Clearly not in the best condition and possibly infected, but as it was sold in the brewpub itself only a few yards from the in-house brewery, there’s no excuse and I’m happy to mark them down.

Cask at Great Expectations, Reading. Clear orangey-amber with a thin white head. The banana up front is there but not overwhelming, and there’s a little crisp caramelized biscuit afterwards (I’m thinking of the Lotus ones, but I’m sure other brands are available). A light but pleasant wheat beer.

Cask at Great Expectations, Reading. Brown with a loose cream head. Light cocoa and mild roasted malt, with a nutty aftertaste. A little thin and the flavours are definitely on the light side, but it’s certainly very drinkable and more-ish. An OK mild overall.
