Description
Sometime before 1698 one Andries Van Doorselaer started renting a brewery next to the church in Steenhuffel; however, he was able to open his own brewery when he purchased the De Hoorn property across the street in 1706. In 1801 De Hoorn is sold by public auction to Jan Baptist De Mesmaecker and Clara Bastaerts. In 1908, his daughter Henriette De Mesmaecker married Arthur Van Roy, a descendant of a brewing family from Wieze.

Arthur kick-started the brewery’s industrial development in order to sell his beers far beyond the borders of the municipality. He also created his own “Spéciale Belge” brew. In 1929, Arthur Van Roy gave his “Spéciale Belge” the brand name “Spéciale PALM”. The brewery continued to grow before and after the second World War.

In 2014 Palm Breweries is renamed Palm Belgian Craft Brewers. A new micro-brewery is opened in order to experiment with new combinations of herbs, spices, hops, fruit and wood, and is named in honour of De Hoorn. At 10 hl, the capacity of the micro-brewery is almost exactly the same as that of the village brewery of days gone by.

On 9 May 2016, the Dutch brewery Bavaria N.V. (Swinkels Family Brewers) bought a majority stake in the company. Bavaria initially bought 60% of the shares and will expand this to 100% in 2021.

33 cl. bottle. Copper color with a two finger off-white head. Smells malty with a touch of light stone fruit. Full bodied with fizzy/creamy carbonation. Flavor is roasted caramel malt with fruit. Mouthfeel is a bit - I’ll borrow oily. A little too unbitter for my taste. It’s bordering on those things in 24 oz cans lying near the folks laying on the walk. It was Gordon and Gordon Platinum on the walk today.

Tap in Antwerp at: Le restaurant Noorderterras on the harbor. Dark amber color with a frothy beige head that laces. A light oaky aroma? Near medium body with creamy carbonation. A herbal/caramel flavor. The herbal flavor runs through it. Finishes rather dry, with reminiscences of fruit. Suspect this is a common beer, but it drinks very well.

Draught, small lasting head, hazy lemon colour, strong carbonation, aroma of vanila with some light cinamon notes. Flavour dominated by lemony sourness and is quite dry, later some fruity sweetness appears which makes the beer more balanced. the sweet and sour continues into the aftertaste which is long and pleasant. Middle of the road belgian wheat which is a little dumb.

33cl bottle @ VinensVerden, Odense. Pours yellow/golden with a large egg white head. Aroma is yeasty & malty - lots of hay/grass & caramel. Mouthfeel is medium. Quite overcarbonated & pretty warm. Small metallic scent. Bitter dry & sticky end. Very forgettable Belgium!

Bottled (BB 09/2008)
Clear copper red color, small white head. Resin, wort and metal in the nose - when bottle was opened, some skunky hoppy aromas. Sweet wort flavor, some iron, fruits. In the finish harsh plastic flavors. More interesting than an average non alco, just way too thin and metallic.

330 ml bottle. Golden amber body with a medium white head. Aroma is mostly caramel malt. Flavor is sweet, caramel and spoiled a bit with a strong alcohol character. Promising aroma, but unbalanced with to much alcohol. Could fool me anytime as a malt liquor.
