Description
Sometime before 1698 one Andries Van Doorselaer started renting a brewery next to the church in Steenhuffel; however, he was able to open his own brewery when he purchased the De Hoorn property across the street in 1706. In 1801 De Hoorn is sold by public auction to Jan Baptist De Mesmaecker and Clara Bastaerts. In 1908, his daughter Henriette De Mesmaecker married Arthur Van Roy, a descendant of a brewing family from Wieze.
Arthur kick-started the brewery’s industrial development in order to sell his beers far beyond the borders of the municipality. He also created his own “Spéciale Belge” brew. In 1929, Arthur Van Roy gave his “Spéciale Belge” the brand name “Spéciale PALM”. The brewery continued to grow before and after the second World War.
In 2014 Palm Breweries is renamed Palm Belgian Craft Brewers. A new micro-brewery is opened in order to experiment with new combinations of herbs, spices, hops, fruit and wood, and is named in honour of De Hoorn. At 10 hl, the capacity of the micro-brewery is almost exactly the same as that of the village brewery of days gone by.
On 9 May 2016, the Dutch brewery Bavaria N.V. (Swinkels Family Brewers) bought a majority stake in the company. Bavaria initially bought 60% of the shares and will expand this to 100% in 2021.

Keg draught at Tønne, Leicester. Light amber brown, clear with a ring of off-white head and good lacing. Metallic aroma, some caramel and soft sweet spice. Sweet taste with a quick turn to a more balanced character. More caramel, some brown sugar. Bitter astringency just at the end. Body holds up well with good carbonation. Not terrible but of course there are better Belgian pales to be had.

From a 330ml bottle on 25/4/2026 (shared by Ed with thanks). Pours a slightly opaque golden with a big giant head. The nose is lightly spicy snd yeasty. Taste is interesting. Typical Belgian blond fruit, yeast and spice with some interesting wood/oaky notes. Full bodied with average to lively carbonation. Liked this one.

500ml draft at De Sinjoor, in Antwerp, Belgium. Pours a clear gold color with a medium white head. Light yeast aroma. The flavor is not as yeasty as the aroma. Tastes more like a golden ale versus a Belgian blonde. The 8.5% ABV comes through in a warming way, not aggressive. Smooth and clean. Medium+ body and very low carbonation. Low bitterness. Better than I expected, but still not my favorite style.

500ml draft at De Sinjoor, in Antwerp, Belgium. Pours a crystal clear yellow-gold color with a white head and very good retention. Good lacing. Very little aroma of any kind. A very macro-tasting, in a good way. Clean, smooth, and malty with light pilsner malt notes in the finish. Medium-light body. Medium-light carbonation. Low bitterness. A good normal beer.

Bottle 30cl. from a local Vomar supermarket @home poured into a tasting glass. Clear medium golden colour, a lot of tiny bubbles, fair frothy white head, half-way lasting, good lacing. Aroma sweet malt, grain, hint citrus, Belgian yeast. Taste medium sweet and light bitter, malty, grain, yeast, fruity notes. Medium body, oily texture, average carbonation, sweetbitter aftertaste, metallic undertone, artficial sweetness, rather bland impression, drinkable.

30cl Fles van Vomar (denk ik). Nu AH de St.Pierre tot Brouwers St.Pierre heeft omgedoopt, heeft Palm St. Pierre omgedoopt tot St. Florent. Althans, dat vermoed ik. Goudgele kleur, witte kraag. Metalig, laf, hint van fruitige esters, Belgisch gistje, redelijk bitter. Nah dit is drek, net als St. Pierre overigens, maar het lijkt wel nòg slechter.
