Description
Sometime before 1698 one Andries Van Doorselaer started renting a brewery next to the church in Steenhuffel; however, he was able to open his own brewery when he purchased the De Hoorn property across the street in 1706. In 1801 De Hoorn is sold by public auction to Jan Baptist De Mesmaecker and Clara Bastaerts. In 1908, his daughter Henriette De Mesmaecker married Arthur Van Roy, a descendant of a brewing family from Wieze.

Arthur kick-started the brewery’s industrial development in order to sell his beers far beyond the borders of the municipality. He also created his own “Spéciale Belge” brew. In 1929, Arthur Van Roy gave his “Spéciale Belge” the brand name “Spéciale PALM”. The brewery continued to grow before and after the second World War.

In 2014 Palm Breweries is renamed Palm Belgian Craft Brewers. A new micro-brewery is opened in order to experiment with new combinations of herbs, spices, hops, fruit and wood, and is named in honour of De Hoorn. At 10 hl, the capacity of the micro-brewery is almost exactly the same as that of the village brewery of days gone by.

On 9 May 2016, the Dutch brewery Bavaria N.V. (Swinkels Family Brewers) bought a majority stake in the company. Bavaria initially bought 60% of the shares and will expand this to 100% in 2021.

Lightly fruity and flowery in flavour leaving a bitter-sweet aftertaste on the tongue. At 5.8% it makes a great session beer.

Bottle @ Kerstbierfestival 2006 in Essen, BE. Dark red / amber color with a average white head. Aroma is malty, caramel, abd yeast. Flavor is moderate sweet and bitter with a average duration. Balance is good but very easy to drink, but not too interesting.

Bottle at the Hopdevil in Zagreb Made by Palm and Moortgat. Interesting... It poured a hazy yellow colour with a small chalky white head that went away fast. The nbose was coriander mainly, a bit lactic as well. The taste was pleasant enough, but underwhelming; rice crispies, coriander, dusty yeast.. all ground up into a paste... can’t express my self better. Lactic., maybe some subdued lemon. A void where an aftertaste should be. Interesting... for a beer that claims agrumes in it (curacao), I can barely feel their presence. I kinda like it, but not much.

Bottled(330ml). –Shared with Doggythedog at the Hopdevil in Zagreb, as Royal Legendary Belgian Ale
Golden coloured, medium white head. Taste starts with malty caramel, bready and turns into melon in the finish. Not so pleasant brew.

Bottle, as "Royal Legendary Belgian Ale" at the Hopdevil in Zagreb Guess this is it. The brewery can’t be found on the bottle (only some American company it’s apparently "brewed for"), but it’s Palm according to the menu. Pored a nice amber-orange colour with a medium sized white head that went at a medium pace. The nose was... blah, faint, sourish, slightly vinuous and cheesey. Shudder. The taste was nice compared to that... a bit original too. Starts of all melon like but that turns into berries in the finish. It’s bready too, and a hint of the yeast can be felt, some faint hops (of good quality) can be felt, a tad lemony. The taste is quite faint and mild though. If it was pronounced, it’d be great. The nose, however....

Darught at the Grand Cafe Horta, Antwerp, Belgium 04-10-06. Slightly hazy orangey coloured beer with a fluffy white head. Aroma a bit yeasty and also a little bit of banana detected, little bit nutty in the taste but again detected slight banananess along with yeasty flavour. Very enjoyable beer that I could have had a few of quite comfortably.
