Brouwerij Palm
Commercial Brewery
in Steenhuffel,
Flemish Brabant,
Belgium 🇧🇪
Owned by
Bavaria Brouwerij (Swinkels Family Brewers)
Associated Venue: Palm Brewery
Established in 1706
Arthur kick-started the brewery’s industrial development in order to sell his beers far beyond the borders of the municipality. He also created his own “Spéciale Belge” brew. In 1929, Arthur Van Roy gave his “Spéciale Belge” the brand name “Spéciale PALM”. The brewery continued to grow before and after the second World War.
In 2014 Palm Breweries is renamed Palm Belgian Craft Brewers. A new micro-brewery is opened in order to experiment with new combinations of herbs, spices, hops, fruit and wood, and is named in honour of De Hoorn. At 10 hl, the capacity of the micro-brewery is almost exactly the same as that of the village brewery of days gone by.
On 9 May 2016, the Dutch brewery Bavaria N.V. (Swinkels Family Brewers) bought a majority stake in the company. Bavaria initially bought 60% of the shares and will expand this to 100% in 2021.

Bavaria bought the old Belgian Palm brewery in 2016 and is finally trying to update its old-fashioned image, it seems, with this canned strong blonde, bearing the old familiar Palm logo upside down in an otherwise garish context seemingly intended to attract youthful drinkers. From the Albert Heijn supermarket in Lokeren. Thick and moussy, snow white, membrane-lacing, firm head on a crystal clear pure 'old golden' beer with metallic pale orangey tinge and lots of visible sparkling. Aroma of very pronounced isoamylacetate (banana, bubblegum), wet plaster, ripe pear, white bread dough, 4-vinyl-guaiacol (clove, even soup meat), granulated sugar, wodka, faint touch of orange juice (Varesa) when warming up. Sweet, clean, simple onset, very strong isoamylacetate as expected (banana-flavoured bubblegum, candyfloss) with some pear and sweet apple perhaps; lively carbonation but not too stingy, very bubblegummy middle, white bread-doughy core 'filled' with glucose syrup, while sugary sweetness and banana continue; some bitterish orange peel in the end but very weakly so, along with a somewhat more outspoken grassy hoppiness and retronasal clove-like phenolic spiciness. Wodka-ish alcohol is noticeable without becoming too obnoxious, while this sweet bubblegumminess persists. Indeed, Bavaria desperately tries to make Palm hip again here, in a beer that has nothing to do with Palm's own legacy and seems more like a direct competitor for AB InBev's Victoria (and we all know with which famous beer Victoria in itself tries to compete with - but let us not mention that one in this context). Boozy, overly simplistic, boring, sweet and bubblegummy strong blonde with a very industrial feel to it - heck, this is probably even a strong Bavaria lager, like Gordon's Finest Gold or some of their own brands in that segment. Granted, this one may be a notch above those, but it is in any case an utterly bland and unnecessary creation doing absolutely nothing to respect Palm's history, on the contrary. Poor Palm.

0.33 l can from 'Mr. Hop', best before February 2024. Hazy, orangeish golden with a medium large, frothy, almost stable, white head. Sweetish, quite fruity-floral, slightly yeasty aroma of peach, pineapple and some banana. Quite sweet, moderately bitter, rather fruity-floral and slightly yeasty taste of peach, pineapple, some grains and a touch of banana, followed by a short, moderately bitter, minimally tart finish. Medium body, smooth but quite effervescent mouthfeel, soft carbonation. Nice beer!

330ml can. Cloudy, orange golden colour with average to huge, osteoporosing, minimally lacing, white head. Wheaty malty and floral, herbal-grassy-spicy, hoppy aroma, slightly bready notes of wheat, hints of fresh hay, a yeasty fruity touch of banana, dried banana. Taste is floral and grassy-spicy hoppy, minimally bready, wheaty malty, subtle residual sweetness, hints of fresh hay, a touch of banana, minimally watery passages. Slightly oily, watery texture, slightly dry palate, medium, mildl yprickly carbonation. A bit watery, somehow more Hopfenweisse than White IPA for me - nice.

Halmgul kritallklar vätska med ett tilltaget skumlock. Estriga toner av banan och koriander. Väl tilltagen maltbas, kanske lite väl överdriven. Smaker av mer skumbanan och örter. Låg och beskedlig beska. Värmande.
