Brouwerij Palm
Commercial Brewery
in Steenhuffel,
Flemish Brabant,
Belgium 🇧🇪
Owned by
Bavaria Brouwerij (Swinkels Family Brewers)
Associated Venue: Palm Brewery
Established in 1706
Arthur kick-started the brewery’s industrial development in order to sell his beers far beyond the borders of the municipality. He also created his own “Spéciale Belge” brew. In 1929, Arthur Van Roy gave his “Spéciale Belge” the brand name “Spéciale PALM”. The brewery continued to grow before and after the second World War.
In 2014 Palm Breweries is renamed Palm Belgian Craft Brewers. A new micro-brewery is opened in order to experiment with new combinations of herbs, spices, hops, fruit and wood, and is named in honour of De Hoorn. At 10 hl, the capacity of the micro-brewery is almost exactly the same as that of the village brewery of days gone by.
On 9 May 2016, the Dutch brewery Bavaria N.V. (Swinkels Family Brewers) bought a majority stake in the company. Bavaria initially bought 60% of the shares and will expand this to 100% in 2021.

33 cl. can @ home, bought @ Albert Heijn Culemborg. Clear golden with a white head. Fruity yeasty aroma. Sweet taste with a sweet finish. Not a 'craft' beer by any means, whatever that is. Just another industrial strong pale ale but not that bad at all.

Can 33cl. from a local AH supermarket @home poured into a tumbler. Cloudy deep golden colour, good frothy white head, half-way lasting, light lacing. Aroma wheat, lemon, lemon grass, yeast, spicy notes. Taste medium sweet and light bitter, wheat, lemon peel, yeast notes. Medium body, watery to creamy texture, soft carbonation, sweetbitter aftertaste, husky notes, bit coarse impression, nice.

Clear, metallic darker golden beer, big bubbled under a very dense & fine yellowish head. Smells sweet, almost syrupy, malts. Faint garden herbs, grass. Much more bitterness in the flavour. Initially rather powerful, then weakening to sweeter, almost diluted syrup-like. Again a bit leafy - dark green leaves - herbal. In the end, completely malt-dominated, and sweetness even stressed by alcohol. At least medium bodied, very well-carbonated on the edge of fizzy. Aftertaste shows orangepeel and orangeoil, with alcohol. It's better than what I usually expect from Palm, sorry, Bavaria, but I'm not going to get happy any moment now. Txs to Stef!

Bottle 33cl. from a local Jumbo supermarket @home poured into a teku glass. Clear medium amber colour, small frothy white head, mostly diminishing, light lacing. Aroma sweet malts, honey, caramel, yeast, spicy notes. Taste above medium sweet and light bitter, malty, grain, candy sugar, coriander, yeast, alcohol. Medium body, oily texture, soft carbonation, malty sweetbitter aftertaste, bit boozy, unbalanced feel, artificial impression, acceptable.

33 cl. can @ home, bought @ Albert Heijn. Hazy yellow with a white head. Tropical fruit aroma with some lemongrass and wheat. Taste is sweet with a medium bitter finish. Aroma was very promising but it's a bit too watery to fully convince. Still a nice try from a macro brewer.

Bottle, from local AH XL supermarket. Very cheap, only EUR 2.99 for a 75cl bottle. Color: Clear golden, white head. Aroma: Malty, hoppy and yeasty hints. Taste: Malty, fruity stone fruit hints, yeasty hints. Light bitter hoppy backbone. Bread notes. Slightly buttery. Moderate to over moderate sweet. Medium body, just below average carbonation. Mwah, sometimes these cheap Belgian beers are pretty good but not in this case.
