About
In the beginning, in 2004, the Lupulus brewery was built to brew beers for the tavern next door. In 2007, the brewery decided to create a new beer, in kegs and in Champagne bottles. The brewers wanted to offer a traditional beer with its own unique flavour, using modern equipment. The region where the brewery is based gave the brewers the inspiration they were looking for. The brewery is housed in a magnificent old 19th century farm, a part of Ardennes heritage. The installation is based in the middle of surrounding green fields, beside a freshwater stream. The historical record is sketchy, but we know that wolves populated the Ardennes landscape in olden times. Some say that these wolf-packs came from Slovenia, where the best hops in the world are cultivated... True story? In any case, the wolf was behind the creation of a new beer: Lupulus. The name derives from the Latin name of the hop plant Humulus Lupulus, which means Small Humble Wolf.

Bottle, 0.5l. Murky, muddy brown pour, two finger frothy brown head. Average retention, medium lasting head that leaves slight lacing on the glass. Nice on the nose, toasty, wood notes, dark fruits in the background. Medium body, lively carbonation. Average mouthfeel and texture, soft, slightly fizzy, mild chewiness. Sweet malty taste with subtle bitter roast. Aroma of toasted caramel, roasted dark malts. Nuts, bready. Dried fruiits in the background, brown sugar. Lingering alcohol that slowly builds up, nicely warming and slightly dry. Long lasting finish, roasty, light boozy, lingering bitterness and subtle coffee notes. Pretty good ale.

Bottle online from Beerhouseshop.be. Pours a very dark brown almost black colour with a large thick creamy beige head. Faint aromas of dry dark fruits, caramel and roasted malts. Taste has more dry dark fruits, caramel, roasted malts, salt, a little liquorice and a big roasty bitterness on the finish. Just a hint of burnt sugar. Full body, fair carbonation and a smooth slightly oily mouthfeel. Nice one. Re-tasting: 12/01/2023: Detecting plums also this time round and again notable saltiness. More caramel, dry dark fruits, roasted malts and a touch of liquorice. Not overly sweet and sickly as some of these Christmas beers tend to be. All in all it is a very nice beer. Upped my rating from 3.8 to 3.9.
