Description
Launched in 2010, Notch Brewing – named for the nick made to keep a record when you're having more than one – was the first brewing company in the U.S. to focus exclusively on session beer. At the time, we simply wanted to brew the beers we loved to drink because finding them was a challenge. Session beer has been enjoyed in every great beer brewing nation for centuries, yet in the U.S. it was overlooked. So we set out to brew the world’s classic session styles from the Czech Republic, Germany, England, and Belgium, as well as explore how session beer could fit with the U.S.’s hoppy beer infatuation. Over a decade later, we have a brewery built on the back of session beer and it’s proven two things: beer consumers like options, and session beer is a great one.

Brighton draught, 4/5/23. Clear, deep brass-copper. Beige head is small, well-retained. A bit subdued at first, in the nose. Some very deep, dry, woodsmoke, earth and cellar must. Not getting much in the way of rich maltiness for being double decocted. Some fruity melanoidins, peppered, cured smoked fish lingering. Sweeter malt up front. Base malts adding honey and graham cracker. Smoke but kind of vague. Fruity, extremely so. Bready finish, a bit too much so. Heavy, heavy sourdough character builds on the end. Bitter, some alcohol, too much sourdough. Didn't seem great from the nose and just went downhill from there. Strange. It's not infected but something seems very odd here. Kind of a thin texture at points, too. Maybe some sort of hot side aeration issues that are slowly emerging?

Brighton draught, 4/5/23. Clear deep ruby-cola. Off-white/light beige head is small, well-retained. Very dry, woody smokiness, not salty. Malts seem dry with a hint of toffee on top of brown bread. Cookie, pepper phenols, little in the way of hops, but still balanced and clean. Soft, a bit sweeter than expected up front with a really interesting raisin, prune, vanilla, marshmallow character that slowly moves to dry woodsmoke with bitterness coming from somewhere to very much balance. Grape must, moderate, ashy smoke and maybe even a bit of roasted peanut lingering. Clean, malty, balanced. Super interesting flavor profile here.
