Description
Launched in 2010, Notch Brewing – named for the nick made to keep a record when you're having more than one – was the first brewing company in the U.S. to focus exclusively on session beer. At the time, we simply wanted to brew the beers we loved to drink because finding them was a challenge. Session beer has been enjoyed in every great beer brewing nation for centuries, yet in the U.S. it was overlooked. So we set out to brew the world’s classic session styles from the Czech Republic, Germany, England, and Belgium, as well as explore how session beer could fit with the U.S.’s hoppy beer infatuation. Over a decade later, we have a brewery built on the back of session beer and it’s proven two things: beer consumers like options, and session beer is a great one.

16oz can from HalfTime. Pale yellow pour yields a persistent sturdy white head. Biscuity, bready aroma, hint of lemon. Taste is soft and smooth, bready, kiss of lemon with some lingering fruity notes. Really enjoyable.

Draught at Brighton, 10/2/24. Coppery-brass. Clear. Small, white head to bubbles quickly. Various spices, a bit bitter, but earthy too, and interesting. Getting more round, malty, savory, not too clovey as it warms and breathes. Bitter herb, not dominant, with clean esters and peppery phenols. Not dominated by clove or adjunct. Malty but good dryness.

Brighton draught, 10/2/24. Clear blonde-golden. Small, white head, steadily to cover. Sweet, honey-like malts with a bit of clove and strong white pepper. No banana or bubble gum, but not exactly an elegant Dupont or Blaugies-esque example. But it's clean. Clove galore, white pepper and a solid, very malty body for its size. For all the good Notch does, they can't seem to make a real Saison. Just a lot of clove and pepper here and not much to get excited about besides the rich maltiness.

Pours deep, clear gold into a willi. Bright white head medium retention recedes to skim surface. Meadow and spice aromas. Crisp with sweet banana, bubblegum and earthy wild meadow spice funk upfront. I don't know what Gentian Root, Cubeb Berries and Mugwort taste like - but this sure tastes like it. Turning into a lasting, sweet bubblegum finish.
