Description
Launched in 2010, Notch Brewing – named for the nick made to keep a record when you're having more than one – was the first brewing company in the U.S. to focus exclusively on session beer. At the time, we simply wanted to brew the beers we loved to drink because finding them was a challenge. Session beer has been enjoyed in every great beer brewing nation for centuries, yet in the U.S. it was overlooked. So we set out to brew the world’s classic session styles from the Czech Republic, Germany, England, and Belgium, as well as explore how session beer could fit with the U.S.’s hoppy beer infatuation. Over a decade later, we have a brewery built on the back of session beer and it’s proven two things: beer consumers like options, and session beer is a great one.

Pours clear gold into a willi. White head with good retention recedes to hug rim. Bacon and smoked meat aromas. Soft with sweet caramel, campfire and bacon front to back and into the smoky finish.

Canned 11/28/23, drunk 3/28/24. Clear, blonde-brass-golden. Small, white head, steadily to small ring. Clean and hoppy in the nose. Biscuit, cracker, herbaceous greens, light honey. Very clean, lightly snappy, crisp finish. Nice and malty, excellent soft texture with just a hint of biscuit. Honey, white bread and rich herbaceous hop. Spicy, herbal, moderately bitter. Satisfying but still appropriately light and drinkable. Definitely more of a European lager, as there's no adjunct character and it's really nicely-malty, but whatever it is, I'll take it.

Brighton draught, 3/21/24. Heavily hazy bronze-brass. Small, white head quickly to ring. Excellent, clean nose. Melon, guava, papaya and ample, honey-like malt. Straightforward but very aromatic and clean. More melon, random guava and Passionfruit. Juicy with heavy wheat and oat adding some softness but also a bit of a dearth of body. And a bit sugary. Possibly some more unfermentables leaving the body thinner, while oddly gooey-soft. I guess there's a reason why beer is made from barley. Bit of lingering bitterness, melon rind-like. Do like the hopping.

Brighton draught, 3/21/24. Clear amber. Small, beige head sits at light cover. Heavy bread, moderate bitterness and heavy toast. Almost a sharp, light glue-like character. Probably just the malt but regardless, I don't think it works well. Heavy toast. Bready, bitter. Some supporting caramel with that odd, pervasive glue character. Bitter, not that flavorful, but dry, at least. Though actually as it warms, there's a fruit-laced maltiness that is quite compelling. I guess it does end up being balanced. And that heavily peppery bitterness is great, properly balanced by the malt.

Brighton draught, 3/21/24. Clear honey-brass. Small, white head steadily to ring. Honey and barley-tinged peppery smoke. Some dry woodiness to it and also a touch of stronger, savoriness. Lots more pepper with warming. Bit of sourdough bread in there. Clean. Super peppery, solidly bitter with plentiful malt alternating between crusty bread and rich honey. Good balance, edgy malt and peppery smoke balance nicely with the underlying sweetness. Clean, of course.

Brighton draught, 3/21/24. Dark amber, clear. Small, beige head, quickly to light cover. Oh yeah, pretty full-on Schlenkerla smokiness with rich, malt-sweetened bacon and plentiful brown sugar, light salt and lingering char. Clean and very aromatic. Wow that's a lot of flavor for 4.5...Malty, with great attenuation and tons of brown sugar-glazed ham. But the smoke tapers into crusty bread and a fair bit of peppery dryness. Malt lingering alongside sweet, balanced ham.

Scnitt pour at Brighton, 3/21/24. Unfiltered blonde-brass-golden. Small, creamy, white head, moderate-to-low retention. Fresh herbs, cracker and biscuit with a dab of honey. Not super aromatic and there's a touch of sourdough/blandness. Malty up front with a good amount of honey and biscuit through the middle, gaining zesty hop flavor and moderate bitterness. Some light cellar-like, musty-earthiness on the finish. Interesting yeast character with plaster and light dough. More pepper lingering from hop. A bit unusual, albeit more interesting than your average Keller.

Tap in the Brighton Taproom. Deep amber, hazy, with a tall head. Nutty, malty nose, with herbal and spicy hops. Bready malt flavor, light caramel, dry and bitter finish. Nutty and delicious malt showcase with great herbal hops. Feel like I am in Franconia.

Tap at the Brighton pub. Bright, hazy gold with a tall, high head. Lovely herbal hop nose, spicy, lightly citrusy, clean crisp malt. Bready malt flavor, touch of honey. Soft carbonation with a spicy, bitter, dry finish. Probably the best of the style I have had outside of Germany.
