Description
Launched in 2010, Notch Brewing – named for the nick made to keep a record when you're having more than one – was the first brewing company in the U.S. to focus exclusively on session beer. At the time, we simply wanted to brew the beers we loved to drink because finding them was a challenge. Session beer has been enjoyed in every great beer brewing nation for centuries, yet in the U.S. it was overlooked. So we set out to brew the world’s classic session styles from the Czech Republic, Germany, England, and Belgium, as well as explore how session beer could fit with the U.S.’s hoppy beer infatuation. Over a decade later, we have a brewery built on the back of session beer and it’s proven two things: beer consumers like options, and session beer is a great one.

Cask at GBBF 2013. It pours hazy golden with a bubbly white head. The nose is pine, orange, melon, apple, pear, sweet, white grape and leaf. The taste is smooth, earth, pine, dough, resin, apricot, orange and decent bitterness with a dry, bitter finish. Medium body and soft carbonation. Smooth, juicy APA. Easy drinking. Decent.

22oz bomber shared at a DC tasting. Brown black, very light delicate body. Takes a style that is made pretty sub-standardly all too often, and really perfects it. Great clean example of the style.

Bottle in the USA. Pours cloudy gold with a large, white cream head. Nose of dough, faint lemon. Light to medium sweet flavor with plenty of sugary dough, a bit of toasted sugars, faint tangy lemon, touches of straw bitterness. Yeah, quite a bit of dough. Light bodied with average carbonation. Very faint citrusy tang to finish, with more sweet and doughy malts, some white bread. It’s an OK saison. It dries out slightly in the finish, which alleviates some of the sweetness. Very subtle, dry tosaty grass bitterness as well. Drinks a touch stronger than the ABV, FWIW. Nothing too wrong here.

Bottle provided by jslot38. Thanks! Well I noted it had an awful aroma - but i don’t remember why I noted that or anything else, ah well. Anyway, poured a ruby-cola color with a small off-white head. Aroma was sweet roasted, chocolates, and toffee. Flavor was likewise.

22 oz. bottle purchased @ Julio’s Liquors for $4.24 after Wild Six discount. English pint shows me a slightly hazy gold. Very thin white head with mild retention. The nose is a pleasant Belgian yeast and grassy type hop aroma. Taste is real impressive for what this style is. Zesty yeast, light bready malt and a hop nuance in the finish. Light bodied. A session beer indeed!
