Description
Launched in 2010, Notch Brewing – named for the nick made to keep a record when you're having more than one – was the first brewing company in the U.S. to focus exclusively on session beer. At the time, we simply wanted to brew the beers we loved to drink because finding them was a challenge. Session beer has been enjoyed in every great beer brewing nation for centuries, yet in the U.S. it was overlooked. So we set out to brew the world’s classic session styles from the Czech Republic, Germany, England, and Belgium, as well as explore how session beer could fit with the U.S.’s hoppy beer infatuation. Over a decade later, we have a brewery built on the back of session beer and it’s proven two things: beer consumers like options, and session beer is a great one.

Tap at the Brighton pub. Bright golden color, clear. Clean bready malt nose, light hops, quite fruity. Fruity and grain flavor, a touch sweet. Light and a bit soft. Decent but my least favorite of the night.

Tap at the Brighton pub. Black with a low head. Huge nose of brown sugar-cured bacon, savory with sweet chocolate notes. Rather sweet and also very savory flavor with lots of bacon and medium smoke. A rather interesting rauch, sweeter and more savory than expected, so quite unique.

Dimpled mug at Shelter pours a clear treacle amber with some creamy white head. Nose is malt and honey and some yeast and dough. Flavor is so solid, light root veg, bread and dough and some Heirloom corn. Finishes dry, medium bodied, a little creamy.

5 oz. draft. Mostly clear yellow with a thin white head that vanished fast. Mild crackery pilsner malts with bit of earthy floral hops and light honey. Pretty clean. Overall, as it should be.

Pours mahogany tinged dark brown into a willi. Mocha head with good retention recedes to coat surface. Dark chocolate, date and fig aromas. Soft and thick with sweet date, fig and molasses upfront turning to dark chocolate and licorice in the soft, lasting finish.
