Description
Grolsch was first brewed in Groenlo in 1615 by Willem Neerfeldt. Peter Cuyper, son-in-law of Neerfeldt, was appointed master of the Grolsche brewing guild in 1676. Cuyper died in 1684, after which his descendants continued the business. Until 1876, the beer was brewed in the center of Groenlo. In that year brewery 'De Klok' built a new brewery outside the city. In 1895 it was bought by Theo de Groen, a descendant of a Zevenaar brewing family.

The De Groen family has upgraded the company from 1968 from a local brewery to an international company. Until 2004, Grolsch was brewed in Groenlo and Enschede. Since 2004, both locations have been closed and there is a new brewing factory in Boekelo-Usselo.

On 19 November 2007 the board of Royal Grolsch NV accepted a €816 million offer for the company by SABMiller. The takeover was completed with the delisting of Grolsch's shares on 20 March 2008. SABMiller subsequently sold the company to Anheuser-Busch InBev and in April 2016, the latter accepted Asahi Group Holdings Ltd.’s offer to buy not only Grolsch but also the Peroni and Meantime beer brands.

Bottle: Poured a golden colored beer with a small bubbly white head with very little retention. Carbonation is quite low which is not what I would expect from a Premium Lager. Aroma is quite weak with maybe some malt in the background. Taste is also quite weak with some skunky taste at the end instead of dryness. Overall lack of crispness with funky taste at the end, not one I will be seeking again anytime soon.

This lager pours a clear medium, yellow colour wtih a quick head. This one must have been sitting in the LCBO under those flour lights too long. Stinks like a skunks ass. Behind that I might get a little grass and hops. First taste was not too bad with a not too overpowering taste but strong in the grass/hop dept. Not bitter but really grassy. Similar to a Stella. The finish is grass and the palate is too. I don’t think I could drink too many of these but 1-2 are pretty good.

Bottle: Poured an amber color ale with a huge off-white bubbly head with good retention (even leaves mark after each sip on my glass which is quite good for macro-type beer. Aroma is only about malt, but it’s so weak that I would qualify this as neutral aroma. Taste is mildly refreshing with again malt being the only thing really noticeable. Overall lack of character does not make this beer very interesting.

0.45cl Bottle - Tak Jacob Light fruity and roasted malt aroma. Chestnut color, low off-white creamy head, low carbonation. Subdued malt and nutty notes, just enough fruity flavors not to confuse it with a (boring) dunkel - then again I might have thought that if it hadn’t been for the description at the top of the page. Mellow soft mouthfeel, slight orangepeel ,metallic hop and nut aftertaste. Not very inspiring.

An amber beer with a small white disappearing head. The aroma is sweet with notes of caramel, honey, and spices. The flavor is sweet with notes of caramel and honey - a lovely flavor.

First tasting as Het Kanon 2004Orange-gold, slight greenish shine, large, slow bubbles and no head, as an old beer (this sample isn’t!). Quite alcoholic nose, cookies, slightly herbal. Spiced alcoholic taste - a beer with punch, but not without some refinement - a bit liqueur-like. Sweet, roasted taste - like toasted bread; a bit citrus. The herbal, spicey flavour remains, but I cannot pinpoint the taste - maybe lavender or rosemary? Candi sugar is also obvious. Warming up, it turns more licorice-like, unfortunately. Slick, syrupy mouthfeel, but not viscous as, say, EKU 28. Alcoholburn (surpirse!). This is a strange beer - it escapes classical definitions. It has nowhere the "malt liquor" characteristics the American ML’s have - it’s more refined. But difficult to classify - which is not a reproach. Was: 6/4/7/4/14 3.5/5 Second tasting as Krachtig Kanon Short lived head over cold hazed metallic yellow-golden beer. Pale malts, honey, alcohol and wet white bread, faintly herbal. Raw alcohol in the mouth, spirit, malt sweetness enhanced by the alcohol. Again faintly herbal. Bit sticky, getting more pronounced warming up, whilst acquiring a nasty liquorice streak. Maybe medium bodied, high attenuation. Slightly burning MF. Ouch. This is not the original Kanon , this is more the canned Maximator. It has become a malt liquor after all.

Good, just yellow tinted head, slightly irregular; dark golden beer, some cold haze. Grassy and "fines herbes" spiced nose - just a bit roasted as well. Sharp initial roasted taste. Very malty beer. I would have expected more herbal, flowery and certainly more honeyish notes in the beer. But, as the label says, only "sugars" have been added. Medium bodied, slightly slick mouthfeel. I’m a bit disappointed by tthis. Grolsch can do much better - they’re one of the few larger breweries with some imagination left. It’s a sweet Helles Bock, nothing more.

A yellow beer with a fine white head. The aroma is of artificial lemon - not the aroma of a beer. The flavor is very sour lemon - like an artificial lemon soda. And the body is thin.
