Description
For years we brewed beers in our basement when we read an article in October 2010 about the Brouwland beer competition. We decided to risk our chances and sent our version of a Trappist beer, a dark beer, full malt, of 10%.In March 2011 we were informed that we were selected for the final. Beginning in April 2011 was ultimately the final. The seven finalist beers were tasted by beer connoisseurs, Zythologists Rijckers Anne and Yannick De Cocteau and some Belgian brew masters like Paul Arnott (Dubuisson), and Jean-Marie De Rock (Orval). The first beers were tasted and judged one for one, much was noted. Mutually there was not much talk together ,until they started our beer (the final seven beers were tasted in order of alcohol). All jurors began to talk to each other and two of them even gave us a thumbs up. Then, we knew it was good. After fifteen minutes of deliberations they announced the winner … Vliegend Paard Brouwers from Oedelem with their Préaris Quadrupel.

Ulfborg Scooper Smagning 2012. Chestnut colour with a firm and creamy off-white head. Aroma of caramel and brown sugar, a bit of nuts and some dried fruit. Relatively dry, toffee dominated flavour with nuts and dried fruit, with hints of spice and licorice. Warming alcohol, but not in any unpleasant way. Grassy/herbal hops and a good bitterness in the finish

Squat little 33cl bottle pours clear brownish amber with ruby highlights and a nice tan latte head. The aroma smells a little like Christmas with winter spices, fruit cake, a bit of rum like notes and then some lighter notes of caramel and cherries. The taste is spicy hop notes, spicy yeast notes, spicy winter like notes with cherry, prunes and raisins too. It gets a bit boozy and cherry hard candy like to midway but a thin layer of caramel helps pull it back together. Into the finish the spicy notes return and get a bit resiny at time.

Zythos Bierfestival 2012, Leuven, Belgium. It pours mahogany with ruby red edges and nice creamy looking tan head with some sheet lacing. The aroma offers up thick notes of prunes and dates as well as some roasted malts and chocolate, nice. The taste has some sweet dark fruity esters like prunes and figs but those notes are tempered by somewhat dry roasted malts and some yummy chocolate. Very nice balance is achieved keeping this from getting too sweet. Darn tasty quad.

33cl bottle from the brewer at Dubuisson.

Small tan head over ultra-deep dark ruby beer; bits of lace. Caramel, chocolate, fondant, sweet dark bread, slightly roasted. Quite complicated, intrinsically layered but balanced nose. Roasted, scorched chocolate with a bitter finish. Hints at dark liqueur, black breadcrust, winey touches. Coffee retronasal. Warming up, quite some liquorice. Very creamy MF, bit burning sensation, long-lasting, coffee-like bitterness, but not really full-bodied. Hobbybeer? Well worth being brewed professionaly. More of this!

1/09/2011 75cl bottle @ Bene's place - BB: 6/2014 (2011-424) Thanks to De Vliegende Paard Brouwers for the bottle!

Pretty clear brown beer, aery off-white head, unstable and non adhesive. Aroma: sweet, dark candi sugar, dried fruits, forrest fruits, bubble gum. MF: good carbon, medium to full body. Taste: sweet caramel, candi sugar, fruity, bit cloying. Aftertaste: sweet, alcohol, some citrus, milk chocolate. The beer probably is a bit too young. But I wouldn't mind ageing a bottle for a year or so, to see what happens with it!
