For years we brewed beers in our basement when we read an article in October 2010 about the Brouwland beer competition.We decided to risk our chances and sent our version of a Trappist beer, a dark beer, full malt, of 10%.In March 2011 we were informed that we were selected for the final. Beginning in April 2011 was ultimately the final.The seven finalist beers were tasted by beer connoisseurs, Zythologists Rijckers Anne and Yannick De Cocteau and some Belgian brew masters like Paul Arnott (Dubuisson), and Jean-Marie De Rock (Orval). The first beers were tasted and judged one for one, much was noted. Mutually there was not much talk together ,until they started our beer (the final seven beers were tasted in order of alcohol). All jurors began to talk to each other and two of them even gave us a thumbs up. Then, we knew it was good. After fifteen minutes of deliberations they announced the winner … Vliegend Paard Brouwers from Oedelem with their Préaris Quadrupel.

(Bottle, 0.33 l, at Tuulensuu, 20120811) The beer poured deep reddish brown and clear. Its head was medium sized and almost white. Aroma had malts, fruitiness and alcohol. Palate was almost full bodied with medium carbonation. Flavours were malts, fruitiness, roasted malts, sweetness, alcohol and bitterness. Aftertaste was boozy, malty and bitter. A very boozy and unbalanced quad.

33cl bottle, BB 29/05/2014, merci à Mike pour la bouteille. Dorée, col blanc épais crémeux.3 Arôme est bien houblonné frais et fleuri avec une pointe citronnée et tropicale. Palais fruité rappelant la papaye et pamplemousse laissant des notes agréable de houblon et amertume. Le tout sur ce profile bien belge, sec en bouche avec une belle effervescence et au fini un malt léger tendant vers le pâle.

Huge, whipped-cream - like head, quite even and stable over (cold)hazed yellow- to orange-golden beer. Very slightly oppressive, grains- and (lightly toasted) breadnose. Later garden herbs and (more than) probably white candi sugar. Quite outspoken hoppy flavour, explosively surprising as this stands perpendicular on the nose. Bitter as it is, it is a quite welcome surprise, and satisfying. Quite smooth (terrible term, I know), creamy and yet well-carbonated feel; medium bodied; quite dry finish. Pretty darn’ good!

10/VII/2012 - 33cl bottle from De Hopduvel (Gent) @ home - BB: 25/V/14 (2012-708)

Clear dark blond to light orange beer, big creamy off-white to light yellow head, stable, bit adhesive. Aroma: very fruity, peaches, dried fruits, little sugary, sweet malts, bit dusty, quite spicy, cinnamon, dried ginger, touch of ripe banana. MF: good carbon, medium body. Taste: malty start, cookie dough, some citrus, grassy bitter hops, spices. Aftertaste: fruity notes, some grains and sweet malts, grassy bitterness, dry and pretty bitter ending, but making you want to have another sip. Well done...

Aroma is sweet with alcohol, raisins and some chocolate. Flavour is sweet with raisins, brown sugar, some alcohol and malt. Too bitter hops in the finish.

33cl bottle pours a translucent, deep garnet amber with a frothy, creamy, slightly off white head. Bready nose, pumpernickel, grainy, chocolate, malt, a little dark candy sugar, toffee, prunes, plums. Flavor has a great chocolate note that I didn’t expect, malty, brown sugar, bready, caramel, some light astringency, raisin, dark fruit. Dry, bready finish. Very surprised. I expected a sugar bomb and it wasn’t. Pleasant, dry and drinkable.

Bottle. Pours a dark amber color with a small off-white head. Has a fruity malty spicy yeasty caramel aroma. Sweetish malty spicy caramel flavor. Has a sweetish malty spicy caramel finish.

Bottle. Frothy off-white good mostly lasting head. Dark amber colour. Heavy malty and moderate hoppy wonderfull powerfull aroma. MOderate biter fantastic flavior. Strong fruity notes. Lonmg moderate bitter finish. Creamy palate. Great stuff.

Bottle 330ml.Clear medium to dark red amber colour with a average, frothy, good lacing, mostly lasting, light beige head. Aroma is moderate to heavy malty, caramel, dark fruit, moderate to heavy yeasty, light wood. Flavour is moderate to heavy sweet and bitter with a long duration, dry, balanced, dark fruit. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft, finish feel is light alcoholic. [20120317]
