Test vom 29.12.2005, Gebinde: Fass Noten: 15,10,12,9,-,9 - 10,26

Draft - Guinness, what else can be said about it? It’s the 900 lb gorilla in the stout beer market, but still delivers great flavor unlike so many hugely mass market beers. You get a big, foamy head, nice mouthfeel with coffee and caramel flavors, and a touch of bitterness, but less than you’ll find in the extra stout.

on tap-pours a deep, rich, tan head that laces nicely. Color is black, with the white rivulets condensing. Aroma is coffee and malt. Taste is coffee. Nicely done, but not my taste.

on tap in Hong Kong-pours a thick, creamy off white, one finger high head that laces. Dark amber color. Aroma and taste are malt. Minimal carbonation.

12 oz bottle - pours up a frothy, moderate, long lasting head, dark amber color body. I only detect some slight bitterness. If anything it could use a little more, but it’s pleasant enough and a good session beer. I admit a soft spot for Smity’s because it was my most frequent session beer on a vacation to Ireland.

Draught and bottle. Molasses and roasted barley malt aroma. Black with nice tan head. Sweet molasses, chocolate malt, and lightly bitter dry hay flavor. Nice body. Bottled version in the Brewers Project a bit lighter than UK version but still better than the US version.

My first review of this was really arrogant and extremely beer-douchey so this deserves a re-rate. Original embarrassing review will follow unchanged. The pour on this beer is classic. A tad thin, but still quite vibrant. Tight bubbles roll on up to the top of the glass, providing a show before consuming. Head retention is pretty spectacular, keeping a very thight and long lasting creamy, light tan head. This beer is always a good option when in the mood for something lighter and not hop heavy. The 4.1% ABV makes it a superior choice over light/lite beers that this beer may share the bar with. It’s light enough for a hot summer day as well as roasted enough for a cold winter night. It’s reputation is well deserved. I find myself reaching for one of these more often than not at many establishments.

Very dark appearance when poured, with a cloudy tan color of the head slowly rising to the top.

Little aroma present at all - slight notes of chocolate I suppose and malts.

An okay drink, when at a bar with little to no other options. Extremely overrated. Only ever sold ice cold - so I really can’t tell if it’s any good as it warms.

Palate is watery, and there’s no taste (because it’s sold ice cold). Probably the best marketed beer - because it’s one of the poorer stouts I’ve ever had in my lifetime.

Bottled. Golden colour, creamy white big head. Hay, caramel, hops and malt in aroma. Sweet hayish malty flavour with caramelly hints. A bit honeyish hints too. Pleasant beer for being low alcohol.

Bottled, alc. 0.05% (BB 04/2006)
Yellow with shades of red, good creamy head, lace. Sweet, plastic N/A nose. Bitterish, "plastic hoppy", typical low alcohol character, but not totally hopeless. Clean brew with "real beer touch".
