Description
Old Chimneys Brewery was started in 1995 by Alan Thomson, a Master Brewer who celebrated 40 years of brewing in 2017.
Located in Market Weston on the Norfolk/Suffolk border, Old Chimneys has achieved an enviable reputation for beer quality. The flagship brand,
Good King Henry Special Reserve, has for 8 years been the highest rated English beer on ratebeer.com
Alan ceased brewing at Market Weston in April 2019 to concentrate on collaborative brewing with top quality brewers in the UK and abroad,
starting with Grain (Norfolk), Northern Monk (Leeds) and Wylam (Newcastle).
The regular Good King Henry is now brewed under Alan’s supervision at Grain Brewery. The strength has been increased to 10% abv, and for the first time in 20 years it is available in KeyKeg as well as cask.
Changed to a client brewer as of 2019 on Brewver as Alan continues to brew elsewhere with the Old Chimneys name, mostly at Grain Brewery.

Bottle from the brewery. Poured a clear dark brown with a broken off white head. The aroma is rich and surprisingly alcoholic leading to a strong bitter flavour with a malt alcohol liqourice palate. Medium bodied with soft carbonation. Could do with just a little more alcohol I feel. It needs to burn a little more than it does.

275ml bottle from cgarvieuk - Cheers Craig! Pours very dark brown with a good, tan head. Vanilla and chocolate aromas, dark chocolate, sherry and dark fruit. Taste brings all this together, with a hint of whisky, oak, more chocolate & sherry/rich red wine. Mmm. Full body, creamy and smooth, long finish. Just cracking stuff. Great sipper on a cold night.

Bottle @ home shared with Dutchdrebus. Opaque pitch black color, medium sized brown head that diminishes fairly quickly. Aroma of malts, lightly roasted malts, lightly smoke and wood. Taste malts, slightly peat, slightly smoke, nicely bitter, roasty, liquor and wood. Oily texture, full body, soft carbonation. Lovely beer. Huge thanks to jmgreenuk for getting me this beer!!

2011 version @ benzai. Pitch black colour with a small brown head. Smells roasty, full grain bread, wood, nuts, slightly smokey, slightly salty. Nice! Tastes sweet, slightly fruity, smoked, forrest fruits, chocolate, coffee.. Amazing blend of flavours.. Quite a change from ’the regular’ b.a. stout. Amazing brew with lots of taste. Lasting taste, full body, silky, low carbo.
