Light gold. Not much head. Kind of an appley aroma. Harsh and grainy. Not that good. It lack bitterness, but doesn't replace this with sweetness. Despite the references to eastern Europe, I don't get any of that character in this beer. Just another industrial lager, but maybe more of a low rent one, because it does use sugar and that brings acetaldehyde to the table in a way that eastern Europe's classics just don't have.

Can, sampled at Jomo Kenyatta Airport in Nairobi on layover. I'm sure it looks wonderful but I'm not pouring it on the floor to find out. It smells more or less grainy, and tastes kind of grainy, too. I wouldn't call it a masterwork, but it's clean, vaguely dry, has a light body but not necessarily thin. Light bitterness, but workable. For this type of beer, it's pretty well-made, honestly. Better than the Tusker regular I had on the plane ride over.

This is the Kenyan version. Sampled at Jomo Kenyatta Airport. It was produced at Kenya Breweries in Nairobi. Pours black, with a nice head. On the nose, it picks up some grassiness from the base beer, which is probably some version of Tusker. It has a lot of bitterness, some caramel that comes across a bit like diacetyl ( I found this character in the Ethiopian FES a few hours ago as well). The rich bitterness of FES comes through loud and clear, though the fruitier elements aren't as noticeable in this version. It's not bad, but I do feel that lowering the abv (almost worldwide, I think, at this point) has had a deleterious effect on the overall awesomeness of FES.

F: medium, white, very quick gone. C: pale gold, bit hazy. A: watery malty, white bread, wet cloth, cardboard, rain water, corny, plastic. T: grainy, grassy, corny, bit dough, papery, light to medium body, medium carbonation, not good for me but ok for Africa? 0,5l bottle from Drinks of the World in Geneva.
