About
It all began when Jan-Léonard Moortgat and his wife founded the Moortgat brewery farm in 1871. Around the turn of the century, Moortgat was one of the over 3,000 breweries operating in Belgium. Jan-Leonard experimented by trial and error, and his top-fermented beers were soon greatly appreciated in the brewery's home town of Puurs and far beyond. Before long, the Brussels bourgeoisie was also won over by his beers. Business was booming and Jan-Leonard's two sons, Albert and Victor, joined the company. There was a clear division of labour: Albert became the brewer, Victor was responsible for delivering the beer to Brussels by horse and dray. In 1923 the production of Duvel began with just a few crates. Today, Duvel is enjoyed literally all around the world (in over 50 countries) by countless beer lovers. The beer is still brewed with profound respect for the original recipe and the time it needs to mature

Bottled. Sparkling dark golden, with a huge, creamy, off-white head. Aroma is banana, citrus, cloves, malts, yeast and some alcohol. A long, mild bitterness along with alcohol follows the flavor of banana, yeast, alcohol, spicyness, sweetness and some acidity. One of my favorites on Vinmonopolet, the Norwegian government-run stores that is the only legal outlets for beverages containing more than 4.75% ABV. (060105)

Bel Pils from Duvel Moortgat

Light golden pils with a thick foamy white head. Typical pils aroma, lightly hoppy. Lightly sweet malt with faint hops. Fresh but unremarkable. Light bodied.

Hazy darker amber with a good white head. Nice wheaty aroma with notes of oxidation, honey. Midly sweet mouthfeel with light orange and coriander and light hops. Very short in mouth.

On tap at the Mardsous Abbey, April 2005. Golden ale with a white head, thick and froathy. Aroma of candy sugar, ornages and spices. A lighter variety than remembered, but with hops and light alcohol coming nicely, fresh and coriander coming out more with the Maredsous cheese tartinade. Memories!

On tap at Capital Ale House - Downtown on 10/27/2008. Clear deep amber body with ruby highlights and a medium tan head with belgian lace. Molassas, dark malt, caramel, rum-soaked fruit and raisins aroma. Raisin and plum flavor with some molassas, caramel and candi sugar. Medium body with moderate carbonation. 7/4/7/3/14 - 3.5 11/28/2005: Caramel color with a thin fully diminishing white head. Sweet Caramel aroma and a molassas flavor with a slightly syrupy texture. 7/4/8/4/16 - 3.9

33cl bottle from Auchan, Calais. Gold/orange colour with thick tight white head. Yeasty/satsuma aroma, bit over carbonated with woody yeasty finish and tingly citric end with some drying hop 2.5/5 re rate, some restaurant on Nation in Paris on draught. OK abbey blond.

Bottle: Light amber coloured, hazy, rocky off-white head, mid-sized and sticking to the glass; fruity (bananas) and grainy/malty nose with traces of caramel and honey; initial sweet and mild maltiness; slightly bitter, dry flavour; light dry and a bit tart finish; quite well hidden alcohol, medium bodied, creamy mouthfeel. No sensation, but a very decent brew.....echt lekker!

On Tap. Orangeish with a small, frothy head. Aromas of fruity alcohol. Sweet flavor with some fruitiness and a warming alcohol finish. Very tasty with my Sunday brunch.

33cl bottle from Auchan. Amber colour with thick off white head. Slightly syrupy mouthfeel with candy sugar sweetness. Toffee/caramel throughout. Doesn’t taste its strength. Some hop on finish which gives it a dry tang. Nice enough triple
